Without innovation, coffee could face a significant supply gap. Underinvestment in R&D drives instability, consolidation, and loss—fewer farmers and fewer countries growing coffee, and greater supply risk. By 2030, we anticipate a supply gap of up to 62.3 million bags of coffee globally. What does that number mean? A gap of 62.3 million bags nearly equates to the total amount of coffee that Brazil—the highest-producing country worldwide—yields in a single year (ICO, 2020). For our industry to close this gap without innovation, we would have to bring another "Brazil" online within the next 7 years, which is not a realistic solution. Instead, World Coffee Research aims to meet this central challenge through the development and introduction of technologies that can increase coffee yields, mitigate losses from pests and diseases, and bolster the climate resilience of our favorite crop. Grow, protect, and enhance supplies of quality coffee while improving the livelihoods of the families who produce it.
Sobre nosotros
World Coffee Research (WCR) is a 501 (c)(5) non-profit, collaborative research and development program of the global coffee industry to grow, protect, and enhance supplies of quality coffee while improving the livelihood of the families who produce it. WCR works to create a toolbox of coffee varieties, genetic resources and accompanying technologies and to disseminate them strategically and collaboratively in producing countries to alleviate constraints to the supply chain of high quality coffee. We have research trials and projects underway in 30+ countries, all of which are designed to deliver higher quality coffee, more productive coffee farms, and more sustainable livelihoods for coffee farmers. Most of our research is conducted in the places where coffee is grown. We conduct our work in partnership with leading research institutes, governmental bodies, and coffee organizations from around the world, including the Specialty Coffee Associations of America and Europe (SCAA/SCAE), the International Coffee Organization (ICO), the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement (CIRAD), Texas A&M University and the Borlag Institute, and among others. To ensure maximum on-the-ground impact, we also partner closely with local research institutions, coffee organizations, governments, NGOs, and the private sector. WCR's American headquarters is in Portland, OR with satellite offices in Marseille, France, and Santa Ana, El Salvador, where we also operate a research farm. WCR is funded through direct contributions from coffee industry stakeholders. Additional funding also comes from foundations, development organizations, and scientific research granting agencies. Supporting research institutions in producing nations is critical for ensuring a diverse and high-quality supply of coffee that supports farmer success. WCR supports national breeding programs in multiple coffee-producing countries to assess their breeding capacity, develop roadmaps for investment and modernization, network with other breeders from within and beyond coffee, and take advantage of global tools developed by WCR and others. We're accelerating progress for coffee. Typical breeding timelines are long—and the journey for new varieties to reach farmers is sometimes even longer. But, at World Coffee Research, we're accelerating progress through the implementation of modern methods, co-investment from the public and private sectors, and collaboration with national governments to overcome regulatory bottlenecks. While the agricultural R&D that's necessary to innovate coffee farming and ensure the long-term sustainability of our industry will take time—it will be worth it—and with targeted investment and efficient, globally coordinated efforts, we'll be able to get there sooner rather than later. In August, I visited Peru, a beautiful country renowned for producing exceptional coffee and globally recognised as a leader in organic coffee production. I never take these opportunities to visit coffee growing countries for granted. The year-round dedication and hard work that goes into ensuring we can offer consistently excellent coffee is remarkable, and we're grateful to all the people who make it possible. This trip was made even better by having great travel companions and supportive partners on the ground. You can find the link to my blog post about the trip below. (4-5 mins read.) After discovering the contribution of World Coffee Research in promoting collaborative research and development in the world of coffee, it was a pleasure and an honour to savour the aroma of the coffee beans harvested from the new coffee varieties they developed. And a joy being able to share it with our colleagues under the skilled guide of Elisa from Taste Coffee. #TransformingWithIntegrity #WorldCoffeeResearch #DeLonghi
🌍☕ Some months ago, we had the pleasure of welcoming Jennifer "Vern" Long, CEO of World Coffee Research (WCR), to De'Longhi. As a proud partner, we’re committed to promoting sustainable coffee research that supports farmers worldwide. During her visit, we launched a questionnaire about WCR’s initiatives, offering our colleagues the chance to taste coffee from the first batches of beans harvested from new hybrid varieties. Today, 11 colleagues enjoyed these unique blends! Thanks to Elisa from Taste Coffee for guiding us through this experience. Together, we're brewing a better future! ✨ #DeLonghiGroup #EveryDayMakers #WorldCoffeeResearch #Sustainability

Farmers need varieties that perform better than what they already have. Through our international network of trials, we test both existing and new varieties—in the field and in the cup—and support the creation/diffusion of better plants that meet both farmers’ and roasters’ needs. Did you know? Robusta is more sensitive to rising temperatures than many previously thought. It has been long reported that robusta can be grown in hotter, more humid temperature ranges, lower altitudes, and with fewer maintenance requirements. Despite these attributes, robusta is still sensitive to disturbances, and many current assessment overestimate its suitable production environment. For example, temperatures over 20.5 degrees C can have a significant impact on yields, and many robusta varieties are still susceptible to key diseases and pests. That's why World Coffee Research is elevating robusta breeding as a priority alongside arabica—improving the species will make farming it more sustainable, and developing new varieties will give farmers the choices they need to succeed. We had a wonderful time convening with our UK members this week! Thanks to Union Hand-Roasted Coffee for welcoming us into their space and hosting folks from companies large and small that are coming together to forge the future of coffee through investment in innovative, collaborative research & development.
Managing Director at Union Hand-Roasted Coffee/B Corporation. Driving positive change for people and business. Strategic transformation, sustainable business models, wider system-level change, ESG.
WHY DOES THE UK CARE ABOUT COFFEE? It was a pleasure to host the World Coffee Research members event yesterday. Together, as WCR members, we’re committed to accelerating innovation, ensuring coffee’s diversity, and supporting livelihoods for years to come. However, there’s a significant INVESTMENT GAP in coffee R&D and scaling technology to farmers—over $452 million annually, with the UK’s share at £7.6 million. We can’t tackle this alone; government support will be crucial. Share your thoughts on why the UK cares about coffee to help shape the UK’s narrative on this issue. Yesterday, we also had the chance to taste the first F1 samples from Rwanda, which was an exciting experience. It was encouraging to hear that WCR is on track to deliver 100 new coffee varieties by 2030. Thank you to WCR and everyone who joined us! 🙌 Union Hand-Roasted Coffee #InnovationInCoffee #future #agriculture #R&D #CoffeeDiversity #Govermentsupport
