Is AZEC Truly Guiding ASEAN Towards a Clean Energy Future? At the August 2024 AZEC Advocacy Group Round Table in Jakarta, discussions centred on achieving net-zero emissions across ASEAN. The development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing zero-carbon systems holds potential. But are these policy discussions and MoUs actually driving change? While ERIA President Tetsuya Watanabe emphasised the importance of policies that balance decarbonisation with economic growth, the region’s heavy dependence on fossil fuels casts doubt on whether these frameworks can realistically transition ASEAN to renewable energy in time, or if they remain aspirational. With initiatives like the AZEC Sectoral Initiative focusing on key industries, it raises the question: Is ASEAN truly shifting towards a cleaner energy future, or do fossil fuels still dominate the agenda? The Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) has set ambitious goals for decarbonising Asia, but new analysis by Zero Carbon Analytics has revealed that over 35% of its agreements focus on fossil fuel technologies like LNG, ammonia co-firing, and CCS. These technologies, while promoted as “transition” solutions, pose significant risks to Southeast Asia’s decarbonisation efforts. Experts warn that relying on fossil fuels could hinder the region’s ability to meet its net-zero targets and increase long-term costs. Is AZEC truly on the right path to a sustainable future, or is it prolonging fossil fuel dependence? How USAID Mobilised Over $1 Million for Clean Energy Investments in Laos 💡 USAID's Clean Energy Innovation Fund (CEIF), part of the Laos Energy Security (LES) initiative, has mobilised over $1 million in investments to advance renewable energy projects in Laos. Through matching grants of up to $250,000, local entrepreneurs have been empowered to develop innovative clean energy technologies, including solar-powered irrigation systems, boosting Laos' solar generation capacity by at least 100 kW. These projects have not only contributed to reducing energy costs but also to the reduction of 300,000 tCO2e of greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels and increasing the use of clean energy in off-grid areas, USAID is helping Laos meet its climate goals and strengthen energy security. In addition to direct investment, CEIF has enhanced the financial skills of local businesses, enabling them to plan and manage clean energy projects effectively. Public-private partnerships fostered by USAID have also accelerated the adoption of renewable energy across multiple sectors in Laos. USAID's work through CEIF is driving Laos towards a more sustainable energy future, promoting innovation, and supporting the country's long-term growth in clean energy. A recent study by Solutions for Our Climate (기후솔루션), Oil Change International & Japan Center for a Sustainable Environment and Society JACSES reveals that Japan has been providing four times more funding to oil and gas projects compared to clean energy initiatives, amounting to $24.5 billion. Despite committing to stop financing fossil fuels by the end of 2022, Japan, as part of the G7, ranks as the third-largest supporter of fossil fuel projects within the G20 countries. #Japan #dirtyfinancing Read about Japan's continued fossil fuel financing here: https://bit.ly/4eCGvar
