Today, on International Women in Engineering Day, we honor our amazing colleagues at Fresh and the other industry leaders who break new ground every day, not only in terms of innovation but also, in deconstructing barriers and paving the way for future generations. Ellen Ochoa is an American engineer and former astronaut who, in 1993, became the first Latina woman to go to space (as well as the first astronaut to play the flute in low-earth orbit!). On a nine-day mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, Ellen and her fellow explorers conducted critical scientific investigations into Earth's ozone layer and atmospheric chemistry, yielding data to better understand these complex processes. Among other responsibilities, Ellen operated the Remote Manipulator System (RMS)—the shuttle's robotic arm—to deploy and capture the Spartan-201 satellite, which gathered mission-critical data during the expedition. Whether we think of Penny Allen, Fresh's software managing director (an influential leader and employee advocate with a background in Aerospace Engineering), Nissa Van Meter (RF engineering extraordinaire), Alison Fraher (an automation engineer specializing in electrical schematics, PLC code development, and prior to Fresh, novel waste processing systems), Paige Carter (whose professional engineering pursuits extend beyond Fresh to Society for Advanced Rocket Propulsion (SARP) and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration), or any of the other amazing women at Fresh who drive us to do more and do better as a collective— Here's to you!
