Don’t Wait Until Pregnancy to Pay Attention to Diet and Prenatal Supplements – Here’s Why Newly pregnant women often hurry to get on prenatal supplements as soon as they discover they are pregnant. While they certain should do that, it is often too late to provide some preventive benefits of multivitamins which are crucial BEFORE conception. In the opinion of many experts, all women of childbearing age should be on a good multivitamin in addition to a healthy diet. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology showed that the use of multivitamin supplements by women prior to becoming pregnant was associated with fewer preterm deliveries. Preterm birth is defined as birth at less than 37 weeks of gestation and is associated with a lower rate of infant survival during the first year of life. Researchers utilized data from the Pregnancy, Infection and Nutrition Study which recruited 2,010 women during their 24 to 29 week of pregnancy. They compared the incidence of preterm delivery among women who took multivitamins prior to conception, before conception and during pregnancy, during pregnancy only, or not at all. Women who took a multivitamin supplement before conception had half the risk of early and late preterm delivery than those who took no vitamins. Women who used multivitamins only during pregnancy had approximately the same amount of preterm births when compared to women who took none at all. This study, as well as many previous studies, reinforces the concern that waiting until pregnancy is confirmed may be too late for nutritional intervention to benefit many pregnancy outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gSSw-wWt

Myth: High Protein Diets are Bad for the Bones and Kidneys It seems that carbohydrates and fats take much of the blame for various health issues, but protein has also been accused of causing certain health problems, mostly related to kidneys and bones. It seems these concerns have surfaced more lately due to the popularity of certain high protein diets. Early research linked protein intake to increased urinary calcium which was thought to lead to excess bone loss. However, newer and better research done since does not support that concern. The evidence now shows that protein does not have a negative effect on bone, and in most cases it even has a protective effect. It was also thought that high protein intake over-stressed the kidneys and could lead to kidney damage. Once again, though, later research has shown that high protein intake itself does not damage normally healthy kidneys. Bone health and kidney health are supported by numerous nutrients and lifestyle factors. Getting a healthy overall diet with plenty of potassium and nutrients related to bone health is far more influential on your bone and kidney health than a higher than average protein intake. To be clear, we are referring to the effects of protein on normally healthy bones and kidneys. If a person has a pre-existing condition or kidney dysfunction, they should consult their health professional to determine what diet is best in their circumstance. To learn more about the benefits and functions of protein, how to choose a quality source, and some interesting facts related to protein, see the following article: https://lnkd.in/guicK2PZ Usana Info: Https://worldbestvitamin.usana.com
