What will GACP and GMP standards mean for Thailand’s Cannabis growers? GACP (Good Agricultural and Collection Practices) plays a crucial role in the cannabis industry, particularly for growers who aim to cultivate cannabis for export or for medicinal purposes. GACP provides guidelines that cover the entire cultivation process, from seed to sale, ensuring the minimum required quality assurance in plant cultivation. It emphasizes the importance of well-trained personnel, adherence to local regulations on fertilizing, storage, handling, and packaging, as well as the need for transparency and documentation throughout the process. The ultimate goal is to bring a consistent and safe product to the market. Cannabis in Thailand is recognized as a medicinal herb, regardless of whether it is cultivated for recreational or pharmaceutical use. Therefore, growers should adhere to both GACP and processors to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) guidelines, even if the standards are not yet enforced in Thailand . For end-users, buying labelled GACP products will ensure that the end product was produced in a sterile and safe environment, remains consistent across batches, and is fundamentally safe for consumption. What standard to use? The EU-GACP is seen as the gold standard and applies to all medicinal herbs being imported into the EU, not limited to cannabis. If a cultivator can meet the EU standards they can export to virtually any market. Neither USA nor Canada has a similar universally recognized standard and anecdotally exports from these two countries have faced multiple import restrictions. Unfortunately, many cultivators, particularly those from legacy or from North American markets, fail to recognize the significance of the GACP and GMP standards and, in some cases, choose to minimally comply to local requirements. When contemplating the journey to GACP and GMP it pays to map out a path to EU compliance simply to meet potential market opportunities. For cultivators in Thailand, moving towards GACP and GMP standards, it is sensible to discuss the additional requirements to meet the EU standards with your regulatory advisors and consultants.
