✨ What’s the ROI on breaking biases in venture capital? 'She Wins Climate' is redefining how we measure success by investing in women-led climate startups with a clear focus on both financial and impact returns. 💪 We’re thrilled to announce that The Radical Fund is one of ten fund managers chosen to be part of We Fund Climate, the VC initiative of She Wins Climate, launched at COP28 UAE, is IFC - International Finance Corporation’s flagship program to accelerate women-led climate startups and increase their access to climate investment in Emerging Markets and Developing Economies. Check out the program here: https://lnkd.in/gs2yxzDq On October 17th, during our in-person kick-off hosted by Value For Women Ltd. and IFC Middle East, IFC - International Finance Corporation, we challenged ourselves with tough but critical questions that will shape the future of climate tech investing with a gender lens: 1️⃣ How can VC fund managers better measure and embed climate and gender metrics into their funds and portfolios? 2️⃣ What biases do VCs have when speaking with women founders versus male counterparts? Are LPs also biased towards female fund managers? 3️⃣ Where’s the data on female-founder exits? In a world driven by DPI and IRR, how can we illuminate the commercial case for investing in women-led ventures? The discussion followed a panel on October 16th, "Future Trends & Opportunities for Women-led Startups in the Climate Space" at GITEX GLOBAL Largest Tech & Startup Show in the World Dubai, UAE where Alina Truhina was panelist diving deep into the systemic barriers women founders face, largely due to the design of the VC industry itself—from investment processes to team diversity and culture. We were joined by fellow panelists Laurien Field, Aakash Shah, Mark Kahn, and expertly moderated by Sammar Essmat. We also explored how we can create pathways for more women to rise to leadership levels within startups—the next generation of female founders—while financial institutions like IFC - International Finance Corporation and others provide the critical capital and technical assistance needed across emerging markets. This is closely aligned with our broader commitment to driving gender and diversity across our group Utopia Capital Management and 54 Collective. Special thanks to IFC - International Finance Corporation IFC Middle East IFC Disruptive Tech, VC & Funds and all the amazing funds supporting this initiative! 🙌 Mark Kahn Sonia Weymuller Lola Fernandez Flores Aakash Shah Sanskriti Kapoor M. 🗞️ DealStreetAsia's recent report, "Women in SE Asia’s VC Ecosystem 2024," highlights both progress and challenges in #GenderInclusion. Despite a notable growth rate of 16.3% in female investment leadership, women remain underrepresented in senior VC roles, comprising just 17.9% of investment leaders across the region. The report interviewed Alina Truhina, CEO & Managing Partner of The Radical Fund, who explained, "Diversity in venture capital is crucial not only for fairness but for integrating diverse perspectives that enhance innovation and ROI. Addressing the systemic underrepresentation of women in senior roles is essential through targeted policies and initiatives." The Radical Fund has built a 50/50 gender-balanced team and is committed to hosting regular workshops to advise companies on integrating diversity into their teams and operations. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/gUyrXgBQ Join us in advancing opportunities for female founders in climate tech! 🤝 Get in touch: connect@radical-asia.com Thank you Deepshikha Monga and Abhishek Chatterjee for the insightful report and the opportunity to provide our insights #VentureCapital #GenderInclusion #SoutheastAsia #ClimateTech

Better late than never 😅 ...here is a quick update from an intense, wildly insightful, energising-ly busy, and action-packed #NewYorkClimateWeek 2024. Action talks. We'd love to partner with #SoutheastAsia ecosystem players to bring more action from our region, to New York Climate Week 2025. Reach out to us if you're game. #action #collaboration #climate
I hesitated to post about The Radical Fund's participation at #NewYorkClimateWeek 2024 and #UNGA. There are already so many meaningful, comprehensive and thoughtful accounts of the dialogues of 6,500+ global stakeholders across 1000+ events that happened that week. Since coming back to Southeast Asia, I have realised that what is even more valuable than taking part in the week itself, is what happens after it. The actions, commitments, alliances, collaborations (and yes - more dialogues!) that emerge across the world are, in my view, ever more helpful than any COP. Top 3 actions we are taking on, as a direct result of NYCW 2024: 1️⃣ Increasing the participation of #SoutheastAsia in #NYCW2025. We have made a commitment to partner with one of SEA's leading Agri stakeholders to do this together. It was disappointing to not have had more Southeast Asian climate visionaries in New York this year. C'mon SEA! 2️⃣ Inspired by Serena O.'s Fin-Erth dinners and Sophie Purdom's #FemaleFounders & Funders event in NY, we are developing something similar for SEA for #women in VC. Reach out if you're interested in partnering on this. 3️⃣ Closing the gap between early-stage and later-stage VC. Learning from TPG Rise folks, we are on a mission to solve the #climatefinancing gap for climate ventures in SEA. If you're a key player in, or have been working on #blendedfinance, #venturedebt or similar innovative instruments - we'd love to collaborate with you. Are you in Southeast Asia and attended NYCW2024? Would love to hear your thoughts on the above. #unlockingsolutions #climatemitigation #climateadaptation #collaboration

In 2023, Alina Truhina started The Radical Fund investing in early-stage ventures in Southeast Asia that are scaling solutions across climate adaptation and mitigation. Since starting the fund last year, they have made 6 investments and have a team of 8 professionals with 50% gender balance in the team. 💡 Who is part of their portfolio? Arkadiah Technology 🇸🇬 founded by Reuben Lai Okapi Solar 🇲🇾 founded by Zhern Yung Lai and Christopher Kwong Alternō 🇻🇳 founded by Hai Ho, Nam Nguyen and Kent Nguyen Alicia Bots 🇸🇬 founded by Inder Mukhopadhyay And two more companies 🇸🇬🇮🇩 from that are yet to be publicly announced. 🚀 How do they look at entrepreneurs? Every business in their portfolio is evaluated for its potential to drive climate resilience in Southeast Asia. They measure this in three ways: 📜 The entrepreneur's prior experience in, openness and commitment to the issue 🔢 The setting of clear and defensible metrics that estimate and validate the venture’s potential to drive climate mitigation/adaptation 📐 The designing of tactical solutions to reach those metrics by aligning the business model and value chain to the climate goals 💡Why South-East Asia? “SEA is one of the most adversely affected regions of the world when it comes to climate change, and yet investment is still predominantly going toward US and European ventures,” - Alina Truhina, CEO and Managing Partner of The Radical Fund. The Radical Fund’s investment goes beyond traditional cleanTech and climateTech verticals. The Fund also backs scalable ventures that may not look like traditional climate businesses, and have or may potentially have- climate impact as part of their model and ethos. This includes companies across Agriculture, Food, Circular Economy, Financial and Mobility/Logistics and other sub-sectors. PS. I am having Alina on Startup Wednesdays - what are some questions that I should ask?
