Wild Wild Punjab Review : Luv Ranjan's film is an entertaining but bumpy trip of misadventures

Critic's Rating: 3.5/5
Story: A group of drunk boys decides to avenge a friend's breakup by crashing his ex-girlfriend's wedding and seeking closure. However, this impromptu plan leads them to misadventures that throw their trip completely off track.

Review: 'Wild Wild Punjab (WWP)' centers around Rajesh Khanna, aka Khanne (Varun Sharma), who, nursing a broken heart, decides to crash his girlfriend Vaishali's (Asheema Vardaan) wedding in Pathankot to declare, "I am over you." He is joined by his quirky friends—Honey Paaji (Manjot Singh), Maan Arora, aka Arore (Sunny Singh), and Gaurav Jain, aka Jainu (Jassie Gill). Along their journey, Radha (Patralekhaa) and Meera (Ishita Raj) join their misadventures, turning a 3-hour drive into a seemingly endless series of detours. The film follows their chaotic trip, racing against time to reach the wedding within 28 hours.

Directed by Simarpreet Singh, known for web shows like 'College Romance' and 'Half Love Half Arranged,' and with a story by Luv Ranjan (of the 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama' series and 'Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar'), 'WWP' aims to deliver consistent laughs throughout its 110-minute runtime. Though the plot is predictable, the film shines with clever dialogues and strong performances. Notable lines, such as when the gang forgets the previous night and quips, "'Hangover' movie thodi hain, real mein nahi hota yeh sab," and other one-liners such as "stretchable hai ladki (instead of flexible)," add to the humour.

The film, while entertaining, has flaws. It features typical slapstick comedy elements and loud, over-the-top characters like gun-shooting mafias. However, the narrative's brisk pace helps maintain the engagement despite occasional dragged-out sequences.

Sunny Singh, introduced as "Kaam Dev ki najaaayaz aulaad," performs well as Arore, who falls for every girl he meets. His portrayal is reminiscent of Vicky Kaushal's character in 'Manmarziyan,' though his character lacks depth. Jassie Gill excels as the obedient 'Babuji ka eklauta beta,' with Gopal Dutt portraying his father in an irritating yet fabulous manner. Varun Sharma's portrayal of the heartbroken Khanne delivers the film's best dialogues (wait for his Punjabi boliyan in the climax), though it feels like an extension of his character Choocha from 'Fukrey.' Manjot Singh rounds out the gang as the "Punjabi Shravan Kumar," devoted to his father and his beloved car, Paro. Patralekhaa, Ishita Raj, Asheema Vardaan, and Rajesh Sharma add to the group's comedic antics.

Set in Punjab, the film features upbeat songs like 'Meri Baggi Mera Ghoda' by Bali and 'Husn Irani' by Guru Randhawa. Music by Hitesh Sonik enhances the energetic vibe. Nigam Bomzan's cinematography captures Punjab's vibrant culture well.

In essence, 'WWP' is a cocktail mix of films like 'Fukrey,' 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama,' and 'Hangover,' providing familiar yet entertaining drama and misadventures. Despite its predictability and some over-the-top slapstick comedy, the film maintains a lively pace and offers a fun watch.
