This year on 15th of August, India is all set to celebrate its 78th Independence Day. The freedom we received from British rule, came to us at huge cost. Freedom fighters were killed, harassed and made to languish in jail for their cause. And so, as Indians-- we must make sure we remember and honour our ancestors who gave it their all so that we can be free from the British Raj today.
In 2022, under the banner of Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav, the Indian government launched the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. That year more than 5 crore selfies were uploaded on the website. This year on August 8, 2024, the Indian government announced the third edition of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign which is scheduled from August 9 to August 15, 2024. This celebration of the Indian flag begins a few days before Independence Day every year. The programme was originally launched to invite people to bring the Tiranga (the Indian flag) home and hoist it with pride. According to the official website of the campaign, the idea of this campaign was rooted in the thought that people’s relationship with the Indian flag has always been formal and official. By bringing the Tiranga home, people will be able to connect with the Indian flag, and this act will symbolize everyone’s active effort in nation-building.

How to maintain the dignity of the Indian Flag while hoisting?
The use, display, and hoisting of the Indian flag are guided by ‘Flag Code of India 2002’ and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. The flag is a symbol of our Nation’s independence against British rule, thus, it is imperative to be careful while hoisting the flag. Here are a few things one should keep in mind to avoid incorrect display of the national flag:
1.The bands should be in order. The top band should always be saffron and the bottom green. Never hoist the flag inverted.
2.Make sure that the hoisted flag is in good condition; a torn or damaged flag should never be hoisted anywhere.
3.The flag should always stay standing and should never be dipped.
4.The flag is not a decoration. It should be placed at a high point and not used as any of the following- festoon, rosette or bunting.
5.The flag should not be used as a part of a costume, uniform or accessory.
6.While the flag can be of any size; the ratio of 3:2 is undebatable. The correct ratio is very important for the display.
