Parliament Monsoon Session 2024 live Update: Budget failed to address job creation, agriculture issues, states Opposition

Parliament Monsoon Session 2024 live: Opposition MPs in the Rajya Sabha criticized the government's handling of economic, agricultural, and unemployment issues, claiming the Budget failed to address these key concerns. Former minister Kapil Sibal urged the government to create a roadmap for employment generation as AI threatens jobs.

AAP’s Raghav Chadha called for the restoration of indexation on long-term capital gains to attract investors, warning that removing this benefit could increase black money in the real estate sector. He accused the government of taking 70-80% of public income through taxes without providing adequate services, likening the situation to paying taxes like in England but receiving services like in Somalia.

Congress' Randeep Singh Surjewala accused the government of neglecting farmers by not fixing the MSP for the 2024-25 kharif season according to the "C2 plus 50%" formula.

He claimed the Budget focused on political appeasement rather than agricultural needs, calling it a "kursi bachao, sahiyogi dal patao" (save government, appease allies) Budget.

Sibal highlighted an International Labour Organization report stating 83% of India’s youth are unemployed due to issues in education, skill development, industrial production, and GDP growth. He urged the government to invest in research and development and allow universities more freedom.

Opposition engaging in mere politics, not giving constructive feedback: Kiren Rijiju

In a rebuttal to the opposition's criticism of the Budget and the "language used by a few opposition MPs during the debate", parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju Thursday accused the opposition of engaging in mere politics rather than providing constructive feedback.

"The opposition has insulted the mandate of the people, which is not right for democracy. After the presentation of the first Budget of the historic third term under the leadership of PM Modi, the country wants to see that the discussion on the Budget takes place in a good and meaningful manner. The way the leaders of some parties commented during the budget session and the way they gave speeches, I would like to say that they have insulted the House by lowering the dignity of the budget session," Rijiju said at a press conference.
