The emergence of a new variant of the virus that causes Covid-19 isn’t necessarily a reason to panic. An expert explains why India’s experience with the massive Delta wave may make things easier
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the Omicron variant of the Sars-CoV2 virus is likely to spread internationally and poses a "very high" global risk of infection surges. However, eminent virologist Dr Shahid Jameel says there’s too little data to worry about this variant just yet.
Dr Jameel, who was head of the advisory group to the Indian Sars-CoV-2 Genomics Consortia (Insacog), said the emergence of a possibly more transmissible variant should motivate India to vaccinate people faster.
