KOCHI: Malappuram FC continued snapping up players for the inaugural edition of Super League Kerala. The latest to join the club is Brazilian striker Sergio Barboza.
The versatile striker was a key cog in Delhi FC's scheme of things in the I-League last year, scoring 13 goals from 21 games. Known for his ability to create chances and deliver precise crosses from the wings, Barboza has proven himself as an asset on the field.
"Sérgio Barboza's leadership qualities and goal-scoring prowess highlight his significant impact on the field.
Off the pitch, Barboza exemplifies outstanding character and is a true team player," said Malappuram FC's head of football operations, Wilbur Lasrado.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Barboza was given a senior club contract in 2011 by Flamengo but made no appearance. He had to wait for four more years to make his senior debut as he joined Limon, which plays in the premier division of Costa Rica, in 2015.
After playing for various clubs in North America, Barboza moved to India in 2019 after Minerva FC roped him in. He quickly became an important member of their attack. Barboza later joined Delhi FC in 2021 and moved to Rajasthan United the next season. After a year, he returned to Delhi in 2023.
