Paris Olympics: Lakshya Sen stuns Jonatan Christie to enter pre-quarterfinals in men's singles

NEW DELHI: India's badminton star Lakshya Sen advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the Olympics men's singles competition on Wednesday with a straight-game win over Indonesia's world number 4, Jonatan Christie. Sen, a 22-year-old and a 2021 world championships bronze medallist, showcased his tactical brilliance to defeat Christie 21-18, 21-12.
Sen's victory against Christie is significant as Christie held a 4-1 head-to-head advantage over him before the contest.This win marks only the second time Sen has managed to beat Christie, the first being at the Badminton Asia Team Championships four years ago.

Christie started strong, taking an early 5-0 lead and extending it to 8-2. Sen quickly adapted, targeting Christie's weaker forehand and keeping the shuttle flat. This strategy allowed Sen to narrow the gap to 7-8 and eventually take the lead with a powerful forehand smash.
Sen maintained the pace, moving ahead to 14-12 with fast-paced exchanges. Christie tried to slow down the game with a long rally, leveling at 16-16. However, Sen's straight smash and a wide shot from Christie helped him tie at 18-18. He then secured the game point with a flat push and a behind-the-back return, converting it to take the first game.

Switching sides for the second game, Sen initially made some errors, tying at 3-3. He quickly regained control, leveraging his pushes and smashes, and built a 10-5 lead. Christie's errors in desperation allowed Sen to extend the lead to 18-12. A series of errors from Christie and a long shot concluded the match, sealing Sen's well-deserved victory.
"I focused on keeping the shuttle flat and targeting his weaker forehand. It was important to stay calm and wait for him to make mistakes," Sen was quoted as saying by PTI, reflecting on his effective strategy and composure during the match.

Sen's next challenge in the pre-quarterfinals is likely to be against compatriot HS Prannoy, who is set to face Vietnam's Le Duc Phat in an upcoming match.
Sen's journey in the Olympics has included a win over Tokyo Olympics semifinalist Kevin Cordon, which was later voided due to Cordon's withdrawal because of an injury. Additionally, he secured a victory over Julien Carraggi of Belgium before facing Christie.
