Supreme Court halts Delhi High Court’s divorce order for chef Kunal Kapur; read deets

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court temporarily suspended a Delhi High Court ruling that granted celebrity chef Kunal Kapur a divorce on grounds of cruelty by his estranged wife. Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti issued a notice to Kapur following his wife's petition, referring the case to the Supreme Court Mediation Centre for a possible settlement.
Previously, the High Court had overturned a family court’s denial of divorce, citing Kapur's wife’s lack of dignity and empathy towards him.Kunal Kapur, who married in April 2008 and has a son born in 2012, alleged his wife disrespected his parents and humiliated him. He claimed that in September 2016, she created a scene at his workplace during a "MasterChef India" shoot.
Kapur obtained a restraining order and accused his wife of threatening to spread false rumors and file false complaints. He also alleged physical assault by his wife before a shoot. The High Court stated that reckless and defamatory public allegations by a spouse amount to cruelty, justifying Kapur's plea for divorce.
“The respondent’s conduct towards the appellant has been such that it undermines the very essence of marriage. There is no reason why the appellant should be forced to endure such a painful situation," the High Court said.

In response to Kunal Kapur's allegations, his estranged wife asserted that he fabricated stories to secure a divorce. She maintained that she always communicated lovingly and remained loyal throughout their marriage. However, she accused Kapur of keeping her in the dark and creating false narratives against her. The court observed that while marital disagreements are common, persistent disrespect and disregard for a spouse can undermine the sanctity of marriage.
