Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday extended his condolences to PM Modi over massive landslides in Kerala's Wayanad. President Muizzu described the massive loss of lives and destruction caused by the disaster as an ‘unimaginable tragedy’.
The official statement released by the President's Office of Maldives said, “In his message, the President offered condolences on behalf of the government and the people of the Maldives.
He expressed hope that the search and rescue efforts at the site will be able to operate quickly and successfully”.
The Maldivian leader also expressed regret over the tragic loss of lives because of the natural calamity. "The President expressed profound sorrow upon learning of the landslides in Wayanad District, Kerala State, that took the lives of over a hundred and injured many more. He described the extensive loss of lives, livelihoods, and devastation caused by this disaster as an unimaginable tragedy," the statement further stated.
Additionally, President Muizzu also wished fortitude to the victims’ families and everyone affected, in overcoming the loss of this unfortunate crisis.
The number of fatalities from the landslides in Meppadi, Wayanad district, has crossed over 180 following heavy rainfalls. Rescue operations are ongoing in Chooralmala, with 1,200 rescue workers from various forces, including the
Indian Army, DSC Centre, Territorial Army, NDRF, Indian Navy, and IAF, actively involved.
Despite challenging weather conditions and poor visibility,
Indian Air Force helicopters are conducting search and rescue missions.
Two massive landslides struck Wayanad on Tuesday morning, causing extensive damage. The first occurred in Mundakkai at 2 am, and the second in Chooralmala at 4:10 am, damaging houses and roads, uprooting trees, and swelling water bodies.
Meppadi, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala are among the worst-hit areas, with many regions isolated and roads washed away. The Vellarmala GVH School was completely buried and rescue efforts continued amid the devastation.
