𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 🚁🌦 Like any other vessel operating offshore, a helicopter’s performance can be affected by weather conditions. Our latest article explores the essential and considerable weather factors for helicopter flight, highlighting both the scenarios in which helicopters can benefit from weather conditions and the potential negative impacts of adverse weather. While weather conditions can impact helicopter operations, it’s crucial to emphasize that flights remain exceptionally safe. By understanding and preparing for these conditions, we can ensure the safety and efficiency of helicopter operations. Piper Alpha Offshore oil disaster July 6, 1988. Piper Alpha is an offshore oil and gas platform that suffered an explosion in July 1988, which is still regarded as the worst offshore oil disaster in the history of the UK. The accident killed 165 out of 226 crew members and two crew from the standby vessel Sandhaven. The accident was attributed mainly to human error and forced the offshore industry to pay more attention to safety issues. Property damage from the Piper Alpha explosion was estimated to be $1.4bn. The root cause of the Piper Alpha disaster was primarily an inappropriate permit to work system. On the night of the tragedy, workers reinstated and injected condensate fluid into a pump, not knowing a safety valve on another deck had been removed and replaced by a non-leak-proof disk. The high-pressure condensate flow leaked from the disk and soon ignited. The first explosion broke through a fire wall that was not fit to stand up to explosive events. This led to secondary explosions in the module neighboring the location of the initial leak. Rubber matting used by divers on a lower deck accumulated a pool fire which ultimately resulted in the devastating and irreversible damage of the fire ball that engulfed the platform at 22:20 on 6th July, 1988. From this point onward, the fate of the oil rig was sealed. © Verdict Media Limited 2021 © Offshore Technology © Smithsonian Channel ©The Piper Alpha Disaster: A Personal Perspective with Transferrable Lessons on the Long-Term Moral Impact of Safety Failures Marc Reid* ACS Chem. HUET stands for Helicopter Underwater Escape Training. The HUET abbreviation is the offshore industry standard for the type of training needed for personnel going to and from offshore facilities. HUET training is one of the fundamental courses working in the offshore industry. Thousands of workers and personnel travel to and from offshore sites every year. They each have to undergo HUET training. Offshore sites such as oil rigs will often only be accessible by helicopters. The commute includes taking off from and landing at facilities where a certain level of safety knowledge is required. All people who will travel to an offshore facility must have a BOSIET or FOET certificate. People going just once to an offshore site may only require HUET training. HUET training is focused on emergencies when travelling by helicopter and how to assess and act in high-risk situations. ©RelyOn Nutec. Video credits: RelyOn Nutec Middle East

What is a HMS Helideck Monitoring System?🚁🚁🚁 Offshore helicopter operations are carried out in hostile environments. The Helideck Monitoring System HMS is designed to measure helideck motion during helicopter pre-landing and on-deck operations to improve flight and passenger safety in these conditions. The system monitors the helideck's acceleration, heave velocity, inclination, roll, and pitch together with meteorological data in real-time. The HMS needs to be fully compliant with the prevailing Web access recommendations and guidelines issued by the Civil Aviation Authorities. The HMS needs to be compliant with the CAP 437 from September 2018 and accompanying Helideck Certification Agency (HCA) document revision 9b. This implies that the helideck must be equipped with repeater lights connected to the HMS system to indicate to the pilot whether the on-deck or pre-landing conditions are within the landing limits or not. The HMS will calculate and present the Motion Severity Index (MSI) and Wind Severity Index (WSI) data together with significant heave rate (SHR), inclination, roll, and pitch of the helideck in real-time. The system will precisely monitor vessel motion and accelerations at the helideck center. These data are transferred to the HMS Processing Unit that processes helideck motion data together with MSI and WSI figures to determine whether the helicopter operation is safe or not. Both onboard and onshore personnel can monitor helideck movements and meteorological data in real-time and see the same operational picture in order to increase operational awareness. Cyber security is an integral part of the system. With the cloud-based service, storage of helideck data for periods exceeding a month is included. 💡Did you know that ShoreConnection International's CAA certified helideck monitoring system HMS-900 not only provides compliance with all international helideck safety regulations, but also has an eco-friendly twist: -it minimizes unnecessary helicopter flights. 🌍 -companies save resources on fuel costs, maintenance, and operational downtime. 💰 -it significantly reduces carbon emissions and contributes to a greener future. 🌱 Its reliability and compliance lead to sustained operational efficiency with both economic and environmental benefits. 📈 Sources: KONGSBERG HMS 300 Helideck Monitoring System.
