Snøhetta has unveiled a sensitive redesign for the Refuge de Barroude, set in the Cirque de Barroude within the UNESCO-listed Pyrenees. After an accidental fire a decade ago, this beloved hikers’ refuge will be reborn in 2025, offering a sustainable stop along the Haute Route des Pyrénées and supporting National Park staff.🌱 Guided by “Terrier” for warmth and “Cairn” as a landmark, Snøhetta’s design integrates seamlessly with the mountainous landscape. Crafted from stone, recycled wood, and aluminum, the structure’s planted roof and dual orientation encourage natural ventilation while blending with the topography. The compact layout minimizes environmental impact, with prefabrication reducing the need for extensive on-site work and heavy equipment. The refuge will provide dormitories, communal areas, and private staff quarters designed to foster a close connection to the surrounding landscape and mountain heritage. #parametricarchitecture #parametricdesign #modernarchitecture #landmark
