This indicates that ensuring energy availability can greatly enhance quality of life. - Diminishing Returns: However, once energy consumption surpasses ~240 GJ/capita, the incremental benefits for human development diminish.     🇸🇪🖐 Sweden halts 13 offshore wind projects The Swedish Government cancelled 13 offshore wind projects due to military defence concerns. The announcement came unexpectedly. It is highly problematic. It is yet another setback for Sweden’s offshore wind ambitions. It undermines investors' trust in the Swedish Government. It puts Sweden’s industrial competitiveness at risk. And it is a serious blow to Sweden’s wider energy security targets. 💬 “Yet again Sweden is bottom of the class on offshore wind. The Swedish Government has been unhelpful on offshore wind for many years. But a plain ban on offshore wind development in large parts of the Baltic Sea is unheard of.   • #EU wind has big gains from summer through to winter peak, while solar has big losses from summer peak to winter trough. Offsetting seasonality means adding "solar + wind" capacity, which doesn't add 1 +1 in actual generation in the EU. Wind and solar generation are affected by their daily intermittency and also by their seasonal highs and lows.   • Gas storage is critical for the European Union's energy security and stability, especially as winter approaches. It serves as an essential insurance mechanism against energy shocks, helping to protect the economy, maintain energy stability, and support the transition toward a sustainable, renewable-focused energy future. This week, Europe storage was down -0.07% WoW to 95.15% vs 95.22% on October 25. Storage is now down - 4.16% from last year’s levels of 99.31% on October 24, 2023, but up huge against the 5-year average of 92.60%. Right now, Ukraine makes up ~8% of Europe’s natural gas in storage and, at the beginning of winter 2023/24, it was ~10% of Europe’s natural gas in storage.   • On October 18, TenneT, the Dutch TSO, joined the PICASSO cross-border aFRR platform, making the Netherlands and Denmark the first countries to integrate since Italy’s recent suspension. This move is a major step in cross-border balancing, enabling the Netherlands to offer and procure aFRR balancing services across neighboring regions efficiently. By integrating with PICASSO, Dutch imbalanced prices may see increased stability, reducing the impact of price volatility. Unlike Italy, which faced foreign price volatility earlier this year, TenneT has balanced prices based on the highest domestic bids, shielding the Netherlands from external price fluctuations.
