In spite of a difficult #trade and #financing climate, Türkiye has continued to outdance the cynics, demonstrating how a major trading nation can remain resilient and sticking to a positive trajectory for exports and recovery. However, new challenges will continue to emerge with global elections, causing the potential for trade-based disruption and wider geopolitical risk threatening a further splintering of #tradeflows. Türkiye’s #manufacturing sector is well established for cross-border #exports, and industry goods destined for markets including the EU by standing at a crossroads between neighbouring regions. While Turkish #banks, policymakers and corporates sketch an outline for the nation’s #energytransition, ambition at the global level is raising the stakes for domestic firms, with many manufacturers preparing for initiatives like the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), creating a tax on third party emissions. #Fintech market volatility has drawn less attention whilst recent challenges impact areas such as #FX, #liquidity and #supplychains are well known. A difficult investment environment has impacted fintechs across trade finance in recent years, with a variety of service providers facing illiquidity, insufficient funding and closure risk. However, with improvement in market sentiment and the wider economy, there is optimism for the return of collaboration between domestic banks and fintech providers. Mehmet Levent Coskuner (ELC Strategy), Cahit Erdogan (Yapı Kredi), Jijay Shen 沈骥杰 (Alibaba.com) and Serkan Unsal (startups.watch) during the #GTRTurkey conference considered how the bank and investment community can go further to support the winds of sector confidence, and expand fintech across Türkiye’s trade finance market. Many #SMEs and #exporters are keen to utilise digitised trade finance solutions and take advantage of new technology-enabled innovations for #trade, such as electronic trade documents, e-exports and e-commerce. Although, there are a variety of challenges that need to be addressed to support wider adoption including developing appropriate infrastructure for digital payment and finance solutions, and modernising legal, business, and financier recognition for initiatives like the Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records (MLETR) and ETDA. Across Turkish bank financing, #ESG criteria is a growing priority, with volumes of syndicated loans in the billions recently secured for domestic #banks, intended for the use of client #trade #financing that can be ESG stimulative. Digitising the #trade #finance sector is a multilayered process across the global landscape and requires change and innovation across several levels. In areas such as #credit lending and process streamlining, solutions are forged between #banks and #fintechs, and as digital and #paperlesstrade draws closer, a network of regulators, practitioners and industry groups fine-tune arrangements for #electronictradedocuments. Markets like Türkiye stand to gain much from #trade #finance digitisation, and stakeholders will do well to understand the international context. Agility has been critical in recent years for Turkish treasurers across both the #corporate and #banking world in Türkiye, who are faced with a variety of risks including #inflation, #liquidity and #FX, to managing longer-term priorities in investment strategies, #capital planning and debt management. Reducing barriers to entry for many #SMEs in Türkiye is key for business expansion. However, there are often multiple obstacles, including market, shipment and exporting hurdles to financing procedures that can complicate borrowing. As many Turkish firms wish to serve international markets quickly and easily, #e-exports are emerging as a useful outlet for #microexport #trade, with less hassle around inventories, logistics and trade financing.
