From Waller Field to Tamana: In 1941 American forces arrived in Trinidad and started the construction of the Chaguaramas and Cumuto army bases. The first priority was the construction of an air field in Cumuto and work began on the facility that was to become Wallerfield. The building of the Waller Field base involved the clearing of a large section of the El Mamo forest and the diverting of the Aripo river eastwards to make room for the runways. It was on the 28th October, 1941, that Waller Field was commissioned as a US airfield. It was named for Major Alfred J. Waller, an American air corps pilot who lost his life in an aircraft crash in 1937. This old air field is now home to e TecK's Tamana InTech Park. U.S. President Harry S. Truman stopped at Waller Field on 31 August, 1947 on his way to Brazil during a South American visit. It was at that time the largest airlift ever attempted.
