Participants will engage in discussions on gender equality, the global response to biofouling management, the environmental impacts of ships' biofouling, and technology and innovation in biofouling management. We are excited to hear from representatives of leading technology providers in this arena: Abigail Robinson (ECOsubsea), John Armstrong (HullWiper Ltd), and Ashley Coutts (Biofouling Solutions Pty Ltd). Day 1 Recap! A Successful Start to the Marine Biofouling Risk Assessment and Inspection Methodologies Training Course! Yesterday marked the beginning of our highly anticipated training course on Biofouling Risk Assessment and Inspection Methodologies. It was a tremendous success! The day was filled with engaging sessions, active learning, and valuable discussions. We witnessed an impressive level of engagement from all participants, who actively contributed to the discussions, asking insightful technical questions. Our presenters delivered in-depth presentations that sparked relevant and important discussions. A special thanks to Ms. Lina Ceballos-Osuna, Mr. Ashley Coutts and Mr. Gregory Ruiz for their detailed insights on Invasive Aquatic Species and In-Water Inspections. The sessions on understanding and addressing the spread of Invasive Aquatic Species and predictive measures for inspection and cleaning were particularly well-received, setting a strong foundation for the days ahead. Stay tuned as we continue to build capacity and foster active learning throughout the week. On June 24th, 2024, a Landmark MoU among the Host Institutions for the respective MTCCS was signed in an effort to accelerate collaboration for the uptake of decarbonization in the Maritime Industry. Our Acting President of The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), Professor Stephen Joseph, PhD, joined forces with: Mr. John Odira Omingo (MTCC Africa) Prof. Shi Xin (MTCC Asia) Professor Víctor Luna Barahona (MTCC Latin America) Mr. Jens Kruger (MTCC Pacific) As we embark on the Global MTCC Network (GMN) Phase II Project, UTT, as the host institution for MTCC Caribbean, will play a crucial role in reducing emissions and fostering sustainable practices within the maritime industry. Funded by the European Union, GMN Phase II focuses on: ✅ Pilot projects for GHG emission reduction ✅ Capacity building for energy-efficient technologies ✅ Public and private stakeholder partnerships ✅ A Gender Action Plan This initiative aligns with UTT's mission to integrate sustainability into our educational and research efforts across all faculties. Our partnership with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) enhances our capacity to influence the maritime sector and exemplifies our holistic approach to addressing global environmental challenges. Exciting Update on the IMO CARES Project! On the 6 and 7 June 2024, SCASPA Port Authority hosted Strategic Innovative Initiatives (Sygtech), one of the winners of the IMO CARES (Coordinated Actions to Reduce Emissions from Shipping) Global Technology Challenge. Representatives from the International Maritime Organization and MTCC Caribbean were also present   There was a strong sense of collaboration and excitement around the potential of Sygtech's innovative #windturbine #technology. With discussions underway on the potential for the integration of On-shore power supplies at the #port, we are thrilled to continue to explore unique applications of this technology within the port and to continue this collaboration for the development of a technical proposal. A huge thank you to all stakeholders for their commitment to this impactful project! From the MTCC Latin America and UMIP Universidad Marítima Internacional de Panamá we maintain our commitment to protecting the Planet and Oceans against plastics, and promoting a safer, more efficient and sustainable maritime transport.
