Aang’s live-action journey will reach an epic conclusion on Netflix. The streamer has renewed its Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation for two more seasons, which will conclude the series, TVLine has learned. Episode counts and release dates for Seasons 2 and 3 will be announced at a later date.
The show’s eight-episode first season dropped Feb. 22, quickly skyrocketing to the top of Netflix’s most-watched list.
Based on the popular Nickelodeon animated series of the same name, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender stars Gordon Cormier as Aang, a powerful young warrior who must master the four elements (air, water, earth and fire — in that order!) to defeat the merciless Fire Nation and restore balance to his war-stricken world.
The series also stars Kiawentiio as waterbender Katara, Ian Ousley as her brother Sokka, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh, Ken Leung as Commander Zhao, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai.

That’s good news. I enjoyed it and look forward to more.
I assume the double renewal and three season arch announcement is so they can film seasons 2 & 3 consecutively so they don’t fall into the trap of the child performers aging too drastically
Ok. So is Aang gonna learn waterbending off screen? I’m glad they’re gonna get two more seasons. But if each season is the same length as this one. That means they only have 16 episodes to flesh everyone out, and tell the story, have Aang learn Earthbending and Fire bending and fight the firelord.
I feel this way too. I think this season could have benefitted greatly from even one additional episode to have Aang actually try and learn waterbending and have Katara improve on screen rather than somehow be really good when she got to the north.
YES! Thank you! I was like…wait what? She got ONE waterbending school and she’s a master now? In the show she gradually improved and could hold her own against Pakku, who as it turns out was holding back. He then agreed to train her and she became a master.
Katara really lost out on the character development.
I totally agree. I feel like Zuko is the only one who got some decent character development throughout the season. The scenes in the Fire Nation were okay, but they took up screentime that should’ve been spent on important character moments for Team Avatar. (Also, there was no reason to include Mai and Ty Lee in Season One since they just stood in one place and didn’t do anything.) I really hope Netflix does an overhaul of the show’s tone for Season Two. It’s like the Netflix show just moved from plot point to plot point without any of the joy and charm that made the cartoon really special.
I agree re Zuko. I liked a few of the fire nation scenes. Like Lu Ten’s funeral. But I agree otherwise. No need to include Ty Lee and Mai right away. I think they just need to plot out the story their own way and not try to copy the show or remember that the characters and how they interact with this world are what kept us hooked.
Actually if you do the math, the live action show has *more* air time than the original show.
You have 8 episodes of 1 hour length vs 22 episodes of 20 minutes.
They have a lot of issues, but lack of time isn’t one of them.
Great news about Avatar. First season was wonderful, and the cast was nothing short of fabulous!!
Thank you for the heads-up.
Cool. Too bad it is ending with season 3.
I think that is what the showrunners said they were planning for so this is actually the best possible outcome.
That’s when the original series ended
It makes sense in relation to the animated series. Hopefully it remains a success so they’ll continue with Legend of Korra.
Maybe they will do Korra next?
Great news, I hope they get to at least separate the next two seasons into two parters like The Crown and Stranger Things.
Not a fan of split seasons in principle, but if Netflix orders enough episodes to justify splitting the seasons, I suppose I wouldn’t mind.
I enjoyed the live action show but not nearly as much as the animated show. The episode count doesn’t leave much room for the fun stuff from the show like the weird, amalgamated animals. Great one-off characters (please do blood bending!!!). And just missing a whole lot of fun. But it is a good show and they hit most of the plot points and character interactions.
Awesome news!!!
Typical of Netflix. Renew something & end it all on the same day. This is how they reward viewers? What a joke?
I’m all for calling out Netflix for premature show endings, but you must never have watched the original series if you’re that upset by this. This is how the original show was.
I’m not sure what your complaint is.
Did you want them to renew it now and hide the fact that season 3 is the end until later?
Did you want them to stretch the show out indefinitely and then cancel it unexpectedly?
I feel like some people just see the words “Netflix show ending” and reflexively get offended, but a fixed endpoint is not always a bad thing.
It makes sense that they would give it a double renewal because they can’t stop these kids from aging so they need to finish filming this series before Aang hits puberty. The animated series also wrapped up in 3 seasons. I just hope they expand the seasons to 10 episodes so as not to rush the rest of the books in the show.
.
I can’t wait to see who they get for Toph; her dynamic with the rest of the cast has to be spot on.
Yay! We get to see Toph! (And to the powers-that-be in terms of casting, don’t mess this up!)

However, with the shortened season, I wonder how the “Tales of Ba Sing Se” episode will be handled.
Given how far season 1 got, a LOT is going to need to be cut to fit it into season 3.
I dont mind the idea of the series ending as Ang reaches adulthood as i think that actually works for the story that he needed to learn but also grow up to learn what he needed to learn to win. I also think it works in terms of Zukos changes and Ang and Katara’s relationship starting. I always felt it seemed odd that it all kind of happened in such a short period in the animation
Excellent news! But I really, really hope they will include “The Search” in Season 3. It’s the first comic after the animated show, and picks up and resolves what I find a big loose thread at the end of the TV series and should have been included. It’s doable in one episode, I think.
Well and even though it will end after season 3 we have news today that paramount + there animated movie will be a trilogy that starts in Oct of 2025 following a grown up team avatar
