It’s sad how few shows are even on this list anymore.
Was going to say the same thing.
Question: Is there a nicer way to say a show is officially ending by the creators without saying it was cancelled. I know it would be one more level.
Agree… I’d love to see a distinction between Cancelled & final season
I totally think there should be a separate category for shows that decide to end. Shows such as Young Sheldon and The Good Doctor weren’t canceled by their network – their creators decided it was time to end the show because they accomplished what they wanted to. I nominate the category to be called “Ending on Own Terms”.
I think that in previous lists it said officially ending.
There’s no such thing.
It’s the same difference as quitting or being fired. The end result is the same.
And if shows did have the option of claiming to “end on their own terms,” then networks would be using it for every show that they cancelled.
I read that The Good Doctor was told by the network ratings are not great and due to cost they were told this would be their final season .
Broadcast shows are so much more fun to watch than streaming ones. There is a reason why NCIS and Grey’s Anatomy, etc… have an amazing longevity. Each episodes is the same time, which makes them easier to watch (if you have 20mn or 42 minutes ahead of you, no bad surprises), even if the plots can go on several episodes, each episodes has a stand alone structure, which makes each episodes nice to watch for what it is without watching 8 episodes to get a satisfying ending. And you spend some time with the character for 3 to 9 months, which make them part of your daily life and make them stick with you emotionally. When you binge watch a 10 episodes show, you already have forgot everything 2 weeks later. So I hope this list will get longer in the years to come.
Speak for yourself. You’re talking like everyone watches tv like you do. I would rather do anything else than go back to the dull, mind numbing drudgery of NCIS and GA and other 22 episode formulas where something interesting happens every ten-fifteen episodes and you get excited it’ll be good now…and then nope, same old blah formula. All the streaming shows I watch–between 6 and 13 episodes–are not forgettable in the least and I rarely binge ten episodes at once (don’t want to wait that long for all to come out, or I have no trouble just going at my own pace and savoring each one.)
It’s been a long while since network had anything exciting or good that didn’t fizzle after a couple seasons, or get chopped too soon.
“It’s been a long while since network had anything exciting or good that didn’t fizzle after a couple seasons, or get chopped too soon”. Isn’t that what happens to most streaming shows? Cancelled after 12-18 episodes divided in two seasons with years between them? Very harly streaming series last. Or end properly. Shorter seasons are not always packed either. Most of these 6-episodes series feel like bloated films.
Keep in mind most tv last three to four season and so many options it must be hard to keep it.
I really, really hate that So help me Tod is being canceled!!! I love that show so much!!!!
But that “mind numbing” format may be why they lasted so long seems to be the point?
Mind numbing for some are the Law and Order and One Chicago series.
I personally believe that The Equalizer should be cancelled before So Help Me Todd. It is really phony.
Personally, I didn’t “build” relationships with any of the characters until I was able to stream and see where they went from one week to the next without waiting. It’s in the waiting week-to-week that I would forget them.
FORMAT-wise, you’re mostly not wrong, plus the kinds of hours and sleep deprivation it takes to produce 22-episode-season television is downright unhealthy for cast and crew.
But CONTENT-wise? I agree with you that it’s not that they’re forgettable. It’s that almost none of them are any fun. Sometimes I want to watch a procedural detective show. Sometimes I want a main character who is likeable rather than an anti-hero at best. Sometimes I need some dialogue that isn’t Succession-style cringecore second-hand-embarrassment.
You also can watch the whole whole show at once my Internet always freezing
Stop canceling great shows! So Help Me Todd is wonderful. It navigates a mother (lawyer) son, who is so funny, and daughter (doctor) whose lives are interwine personal and professional. We need MORE family oriented shows, especially Blue Blood.
The current “Quantum Leap” TV show has proven a worthy successor to the original (even though we still hope Scott Bakula will make an appearance at some point — like maybe bring him home at last and let him help work on getting Ben back or maybe being Ben’s hologram once in a while).
This show is listed with a prognosis of “could go either way.” Well, here’s a strong UPVOTE to renew/keep/continue with the current “Quantum Leap.” I look forward to every episode.
Everyone needs to write emails, physical letters or postcards to NBC telling them you like and want them to renew Quantum Leap. Also call them.
I love The Good Doctor, and have watched him grow since the first episode.
Also, there is no better mindless entertainment than SO Help Me Todd.
Big mistake to loose these two!!
I agree, but theres nothing we can do about it now.
As much as I enjoy the new Quantum Leap, it suffers from one major issue which is never brought up on the show but I know many viewers are bothered by it, especially in this day and age. It is a fact that Ben is taking over people’s bodies (many of them female) essentially without their consent. It creates a certain ick factor, especially when Ben is in another person’s body and engages in romantic or sexual acts, as he did with Hannah at least once. Even when this doesn’t happen, it’s still implied that Ben as the other person is engaging in normal hygiene and other activities where he can see the person while naked. I wish the show would address this in a storyline and maybe come up with an explanation to help justify it. One example might be to say that Ben isn’t actually taking over someone’s body but is literally switching places with them, still in his own body, and then through some kind of gobbledygook mumo-jumbo explanation, an effect is created making other people just think he is the original person. This still would leave many unanswered questions but it would at least make the show less skeezy. If the show gets renewed for a third season, I would love to see them tackle this issue head-on, as I know it is a concern to many viewers.
I think it’s too late to back track on what they’ve already said is that the person who Ben leaps into has their conscience pushed aside and it is sort of an out of body experience. It was a little different when the person Sam leaped into had their conscience switch places with Sam, but at the same time Sam was still doing many of the same things you stated above and the people he did those things with often didn’t know their significant others weren’t really the people they were being intimate with. It’s definitely going to get more complicated if they get a third season now that both Ben & Addison are leapers and are going to want to reunite physically. The question becomes is it better to address the issue or is it better to ignore it and hope people don’t ask too many questions because they don’t want to think about the ramifications of what it means. Is having a stranger leap into your body and have free rein while also being able to change your life for the better worth the price of lack of consent? I guess the best person to address that issue is Magic since he experienced it. Including the fact that Sam did get intimate with a woman while in Magic’s body.
Well, they could try to ignore it, but I know this is an issue which many people have raised and which could be keeping the total viewing numbers down. And given the fact that the show often tackles modern issues, such as gender identity and sexual discrimination, it would seem right up their alley to address this.
What they should do is show the body parts blurred or blacked out. Remember when Gary Shandling wore a black dot over his genitalia for an entire nude episode on HBO back in the 80s or 90s.
Thats what we need.
We are doomed as a nation if a show that have a man who jump from body to body trigger people to where they need their safe space. I think House of Dragons need to take their Dragons feeling in consideration before having the dragons fight each other. You all know the dragons are related. Some could even be parents and children. Why would a show have Mother and Father Dragons kill their children because humans want to rule other humans? Humans want to be kings and queens. I think the show runners need to address this and let us know if the two dragons that is fighting are related. And should male dragons fight female dragons? I don’t think I can watch that show until these troubling issues are addressed.
Your way over thinking it
I agree! I didn’t see how it could be as good as the original but it is even better! And I love how they tied everything together.
I love Quantum Leap and look forward to seeing every episode. Or at least I did. So sad that it has been canceled. The network didn’t give it a chance. Am I the only one who wonders if all of the cancelations of shows that still have decent ratings are retaliation for the strikes?
Heh, I watch a total of two shows listed on here: Ghosts and Night Court.
You should give a shot at “Not dead yet”. (That’s the 3 shows I watch on that list)
I’ve been eyeing it. I keep hearing good things about it.
I started streaming Not Dean Yet and have been enjoying it.
Canceling SWATT is the domestic thing CBS has ever done. Everyone I know is so angry. You r gonna loose alot of viewers..what a bunch od assholes.
S.W.A.T. is returning– it was previously canceled, then renewed for a final season. CBS has now reversed course again and said it could go for more seasons.
Please please please renew Will Trent. RR is so hot.
The only thing I don’t like about Will Trent is that Amanda too often sounds like she’s whispering rather than full-out speaking. She starts out great and then her voice gets lower and lower.
Sick about losing “so help me Todd”
One of the few programs I watch and wait for every week.
PLEASE RECONSIDER
Wild Cards should be a sure thing for CW if they know what’s right for them. The show is picking up steam.
I love Wild Cards! This show has excellent writers. The plots themselves are often predictable and somewhat formulaic, but the interaction between the characters is what makes this show.
Agree. Wildcards is a great series all around.
I really enjoy wild cards, and I like the main leads of the show but one thing that I can’t get over is the lack of chemistry. I feel like the 2 main characters don’t have any, and chemistry is what makes a show. That annoys me bc I love the writing of the show
I agree .wild cards is great. ALSO Sight Unseen
It blows my mind that smart original shows like Alaska Daily get cancelled yet Tracker gets an early renewal. This is the most predictable formula ever – brooding hot guy with a stormy past travels the country trying to find lost souls since he can’t find his own – of course taking off his shirt and breaking local hearts along the way cuz he’s a “ramblin man”. God it’s terrible but I guess that’s what the people want. Very disappointed.
I loved Alaska Daily & too was extremely disappointed in its cancellation
I think the cancelation was more about Hilary Swank having personal life circumstances like pregnancy but not sure.
I thought Sullivan’s Crossing was renewed???.
Season 2 premieres in Canada on CTV April 14.
As of today no date has been announced for the US.
The CW is a co-producer of season 2.
MeToo.
Letting Quantum Leap go would be a shame. I am starting to really enjoy Extended Family. Hope for a renewal.
Trent and Todd should be sure things. Two of the best series on television.
Agree with you about So Help Me Todd, it’s really a cute, funny show and all the cast is great in it though of course the highlight is Marcia Gay Harden. But they’re all terrific and this is definitely the new show that caught my attention last season. Really hope CBS renews it too.
Here here. I’ve found SHT so entertaining and i usually hate procedurals.
SHMT
FIFY
I hope they reconsider canceling
Blue Bloods and So Help Me Todd.
Blue Bloods is a great drama and shows family values.
So Help Me Todd is funny with a twist and I love how they solve crimes. It’s light hearted and I look forward to watching.
Do the stations ever consider changing days and or time slots before just canceling.
The world is so crazy now we need family value police shows and lawyers solving crimes and getting a good laugh.
I feel like Todd is getting a little tired– same old same old
Love So Help Me Todd, it’s the best series on TV. I hope it will be renewed.
Although I don’t think it is the best show, Ghost for me, I do enjoy and look forward to SHMT (such chemistry). YS, Ghost, SHMT, and Elsbeth, a line up I look forward.
Very upset with CBS!! I LOVE Blue Bloods, SWAT, Bob ❤️ Abishola, and Young Sheldon. They are cancelling all the good shows we have loved for years, to keep new show that we barely have any connection to! Friday nights are great, now. I am not looking forward to next season; CBS may have lost a big fan.
Blue Bloods should never go away. I really love that show.
9 shows out of this list I watch and follow, and the majority of them have already been renewed! Also I think I need to slow down on TV time haha, too much time on my hands right now.
What about NCIS Sydney I was just wondering if it’s going to be renewed? I don’t really like the show.
If you don’t really like the show, why do you care one way or the other if it’s renewed?
I hope it gets renewed, I enjoyed the episodes they showed so far. It’s not for everyone though, I understand.
It is renewed which is fine but not at the cost of axing NCIS Hawaii. I’m so disappointed that it was canceled. I love it. I get the new Tony & Zina NCIS show. I’m excited and hope it’s worth it but not interested in the Gibbs before NCIS series. I feel they already covered pretty much all of Gibbs and his life before NCIS before he left. I would rather keep NCIS Hawaii then the new Gibbs show.
Will you be doing a list on streaming shows too?
I can really not understand the thinking behind canceling station 19.
They gave it to a terrible showrunner that thought a clone of Grey’s was what the audience wanted and ruined it.
It’s an expensive series that doesn’t travel internationally, while Grey’s is a giant hit abroad.
I am totally with you on this. It doesn’t make sense to me.
Ngl. I lol’d at Housebroken being in “perpetual limbo”
What about the Spencer Sisters on The CW?
It hasn’t yet been renewed yet on CTV in Canada for S2.
I know they’re both Canadian, but at some point in a separate article, could you suss out the CW if we’re going to see more of “The Spencer Sisters” and “Great Chocolate Showdown?”
NCIS Sydney?
Still peeved that Bob ❤️Abishola was cancelled
I will miss all of the cast
Monday at 8:30 was appointment TV for us
Admittedly, I don’t watch most of these, but the only one that would make me sad if cancelled is Will Trent.
what about Family Law on the CW? Love that show!
I’m sure Family Law is going to be around for quite a while; one of the few Canadian-acquired imports that’s a hit both there and here. I believe it’s already been renewed for season 4 in Canada which means it’ll make its way back here once it’s finished airing there.
I love The Great North and don’t like reading that ‘it could go either way.’ Plus Christina Applegate should play Beef’s ex-wife, if she can handle it.
Had a blast with Rob Lowe and The Floor. Haven’t heard a thing regarding whether or not that will be back next year. I agree with other posters that this is a pretty sparse list, considering the stuff that’s currently in production.
Wild Cards for The Cw was renewed for Season 2
Never mind lol
Rob Lowe needs to stop doing all of those other shows so 911 Lone Star can come back sooner =)
For CW “International acquisitions are not included in the above list” yet clear as day Canadian productions Sight Unseen and Sullivan’s Crossing are there. Both are Can on (Canadian regulatory led content) for CTV.
I think you mean CanCon : )
Fifty to 60% of content per year, on Canadian TV networks and radio stations must be Canadian. The rules are so strict (stupid) that even The Handmaid’s Tale, written by a Canadian author, doesn’t qualify.
