This week, we are taking over a train and turning it into a mobile science lab 🧑🔬🚊 In its 9th year running, the Taiwan Science Train program allows elementary students to hop on and off a science-themed railway train, which is making its way around the island as we speak! Our employees together with high school volunteers guide students through hands-on science experiences to spark their interest in #STEM. In UMC's car, through simple experiments, students are learning the fundamental property of the #semiconductor that act as either a conductor and an insulator, thus establishing the relation between semiconductors and binary codes. In addition, students are also learning the processes for purifying and recycling water💧 that is essential for chipmaking and at the same time learn the importance of reducing the impact on the environment. We are proud to be part of such an innovative initiative organized by National Science and Technology Council, Taiwan that makes science fun and approachable to everyone, and encourages the younger generation to stay inquisitive while exploring the world around them! #科普列車2024 #scienceeducation

We were pleased to host a delegation from Mexico’s Chihuahua state and members of the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association. Chihuahua is an important partner for Taiwan’s high-tech manufacturing industry as well as the biggest exporting state in Mexico. Led by Chihuahua Governor María Eugenia Campos Galván, the delegation is exploring ways to participate in the global semiconductor supply chain. As a leading provider of foundry services, UMC shared our experience and exchanged ideas with the delegation on how to leverage global partners to further expand our reach.

In line with #SEMICONTaiwan’s theme this year “Breaking Limits: Powering the AI Era”, UMC was proud to share our latest technology solutions that are contributing to an AI-driven future. In the Heterogeneous Integration Global Summit, we discussed how we are bringing together partners to provide a near-memory computing solution that can help unlock the potential of #edgeAI. The IC Forum explored pioneering innovations shaping future technologies, and UMC presented our industry-first 3D IC for RFSOI solution to solve the challenges of rising RF complexity in the 5G + AI era. It was also inspiring to hear insights from global industry leaders as well as learn about innovations that are happening all across the value chain. That’s a wrap and see you next year!

Summer is drawing to a close and we’re proud of the work our #interns have accomplished during their time at UMC! Let’s hear what some of them have to say about their experience: “Taiwan is a global leader in the semiconductor industry. I chose to intern at UMC to learn how data science is applied in this field and it was exciting to be assigned to a project related to generative AI, one of the hottest topics these days.” -Tiffany, smart manufacturing intern, Taiwan “I appreciate that you can have good work-life balance at UMC. You are expected to be productive during work hours, but there is enough time after work to exercise with colleagues or do something else to blow off steam.” -Tom, technology development intern, Taiwan “I’m an electrical engineer major, and I was trying to decide whether to start working or continue my studies. The internship helped me better understand the work by seeing the entire wafer manufacturing process, and I can imagine myself working there.” -process engineering intern, USJC, UMC's Japan subsidiary “The internship was a fruitful experience. I got a broad overview of the semiconductor industry and learned about the lithography process in depth. Colleagues were all willing to teach and help out new hires on our projects.” – YaZhu, lithography process intern, Singapore Interested to explore a career with UMC? 💡What can be found on the roof of all UMC fabs? If you guessed #solar panels, then you are right! Since joining #RE100 in 2021, we have tripled our on-site solar capacity as we strive for 100% renewable energy by 2050. In Taiwan, our fab solar capacity is the highest in the foundry industry, and our overseas fabs are also accelerating installations. Together with third-party purchases, our renewable energy use in 2023 doubled from the previous year to 11.1% of total electricity consumption. We are on track to achieving our progressive targets of 25% renewable energy by 2025 and 50% by 2030.
