Advancing Patient-Centered Care in Rural Tanzania. Patient names have been changed and explicit consent granted.
About us
Founded in 2002, FAME’s mission is to advance patient-centered care in the Northern Highlands of Tanzania. Serving one of the most under-resourced areas in the country, FAME operates a state-of-the-art hospital, outpatient clinic and laboratory, with more than 25,000 patient visits per year. With comprehensive primary health care and specialty programs in maternal and child health and general surgery, FAME fills a critical gap in the Karatu District, an area with an estimated population of 250,000. FAME’s vision is to build healthier rural communities, where individuals from all walks of life have access to quality medical care and our frontline healthcare workers are equipped with the resources they need to serve their patients well. In order to build local capacity, FAME provides on-campus continuing education and a competitive scholarship program that allows select medical staff to further their education at medical institutions within Tanzania and abroad. FAME also has a thriving volunteer program, partnering with specialist doctors from medical communities and global health programs in the US and Europe. The program fosters an exchange of knowledge and a sharing of expertise between international specialist doctors and nurses and our Tanzanian medical team. With a culture of life-long learning, FAME continually strives to better understand the needs and challenges of our community and to serve as a model of high-quality care in our region. FAME currently employs 170 local staff, including 14 doctors, 55 nurses, 13 laboratory staff and two X-ray technicians. Our 501(c) 3 organization in the US has one full-time staff member, our Director of Global Partnerships.

🤱🏾 Breastfeeding is considered one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival. 🌍 Last week was World Breastfeeding Week!! The theme, "Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All," celebrates all of the amazing breastfeeding moms out there, no matter where you are in your breastfeeding journey. Families, friends, communities and health workers—let’s support and uplift every breastfeeding mom together! 💪❤️ At FAME, our team at the Maternity Center and the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) clinic have been key champions of breastfeeding offering breastfeeding education to new mothers. Monicah, a first-time mom of twins, was referred to FAME after her babies required specialized care at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). “I feared my babies because they were so little. As a first-time mother, I didn’t know how to hold them or breastfeed. The team here has been very helpful. They have taught me how to hold my babies and feed them breast milk. Now I can confidently feed both of them, and their growth in weight is a testament to the good work the team has done.” Let's continue supporting and empowering all breastfeeding mothers! 🌟 #WorldBreastfeedingWeek #BreastfeedingSupport #BreastfeedingJourney #MomLife #SupportMoms #FAME

🌟Meet Betty* a mother of six, who is joyfully holding the newest addition to her family! 🌟 Betty's journey to motherhood this time was nothing short of miraculous. When she went into labor, she faced an umbilical cord prolapse and needed an urgent c-section at a local hospital. But when complications arose, she was rushed to FAME. At FAME, doctors diagnosed Betty with postpartum hemorrhage, which had led to hemorrhagic shock. The skilled team at FAME's Maternity Center worked tirelessly to save her life. "I remember the intense pain and being told I needed a c-section. After that, everything went black. I woke up here at FAME. I have been told by my family that the doctors here saved my life. Holding my son now feels like a miracle. I’m forever grateful to the FAME team." ❤️👶🏾#MiracleMom #FAMEHeroes #MaternalHealth

Celebrating six years of collaboration with EMSA, FAME is thrilled to announce our latest training achievements! 🚑🌟 This year, in addition to the annual Basic Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support and International Trauma Life Support, we've added a critical care component to our program, empowering our team with essential skills in ECG, trauma care and airway management. 🎉 These critical skills allow FAME's medical team, across all departments, to assess, intervene and re-evaluate emergency cases before diving into further diagnosis and treatment, ultimately enhancing our patient care. 🏥💪 ❔Did you know there are only 10 critical care specialists and 100 emergency medicine physicians in Tanzania ❔ FAME's investment in establishing a skilled Emergency Medicine Department is contributing to a relatively new and growing network of healthcare professionals in Tanzania. Nurse Moses Kikonya, our Medical Ward Supervisor, shares, "This training has empowered us and given us an edge in improving patient care. We are grateful to the management for continuously investing in our education and empowerment to ensure we provide the best service to our patients." 🙏 #HealthcareHeroes #LifesavingSkills #PatientCare #ContinuousLearning
