  • “IT IS PROHIBITED TO CONDUCT ANY MINING BUSINESS AT HOMES IN TUNDURU – MINISTER MAVUNDE” Bans foreigners from buying minerals at mining sites Anthony Mavunde, Tanzania’s Minister for Minerals, recently reinforced the government’s commitment to formalizing the mining sector during his visit to Tunduru, Ruvuma, on September 17, 2024. Key Announcements: 1. Ban on Home-Based Mineral Trade: Mavunde announced a prohibition on conducting any mineral business outside the designated market areas, particularly in people’s homes. This move aims to prevent mineral smuggling and ensure transparent revenue collection for the government. Traders who are caught conducting illicit trade will face severe penalties, including the revocation of licenses and confiscation of minerals. 2. Foundation of a New Mineral Market: Mavunde laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art Mineral Market in Tunduru, a TZS 2.1 billion project jointly funded by local traders and the District Council. The market will serve as a One Stop Centre for all mineral transactions, providing proper infrastructure to enhance transparency, minimize fraud, and improve security measures. The project exemplifies the success of public-private collaboration, with traders contributing TZS 1.085 billion and the council providing land and blueprints valued at TZS 1.065 billion. 3. Ban on Foreigners at Mining Sites: To further control the mineral trade, Mavunde barred foreign nationals from purchasing minerals directly from mining sites. Instead, all transactions must occur at officially sanctioned markets, in compliance with the Mining Act, Chapter 123. 4. Impact on the Economy and Small-Scale Miners: Mavunde emphasized that President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s directives are centered around ensuring that all players in the mining value chain, particularly small-scale miners, benefit fairly. By formalizing operations and channeling business through proper markets, the sector is expected to contribute more significantly to both local and national economic growth. 5. Local Leadership Support: District Commissioner Simon Chacha and Members of Parliament Hassan Zidadu Kungu (Tunduru North) and Daimu Mpakate (Tunduru South) commended the government for its continued focus on improving transparency in the mining sector. The MPs hailed the efforts, expressing their confidence that the new policies and the construction of the market will lead to increased revenue and security for the region. This initiative marks a critical step in the government’s efforts to professionalize Tanzania’s mining sector, curb illegal activities, and ensure that its resources contribute to sustainable national development.
