Restoration of social facilities in communities in the Mykolaiv region has begun As part of the project “Restoration of social infrastructure facilities in partner communities in three regions,” the Brave to Rebuild team has started repairing roofs and emergency rooms in two hospitals. In addition, we are replacing 3,400 square meters of roofing from cracked slate with metal tiles at a lyceum that was damaged by a rocket attack. Powerful solar stations with battery packs will be installed at each facility to save and conserve electricity from the grid and operate partially autonomously during emergency outages. The works are expected to be completed by February 2025. 👉 We have previously agreed on project drawings with community representatives and signed agreements under which communities take on part of the work and assist in implementing the project. Community involvement is an important part of the recovery process. We are confident that restoring these facilities under the Build Back Better principle will improve the region's infrastructure and provide residents better access to social services. 🇺🇦Together, we are creating a brighter and more resilient future! The project "Restoration of social infrastructure facilities in partner communities in three regions" is implemented by the charity fund Brave to Rebuild and GIZ Ukraine within the framework of the "Special program to support Ukraine / EU4ResilientRegions" funded by the European Union.

Vitaliy Selyk, director of the Brave to Rebuild, shared our experience rebuilding 12 schools in the affected regions with participants of the Inclusive Community Recovery Forum held in Kyiv in May. Government officials, partners, and representatives of 150 communities came together on the pre-event of the URC2024. They discussed best practices and plans for regional recovery that would take into account the unique needs of women, people with disabilities, minorities such as Roma, and other marginalised groups. How to rebuild better than it was and why it is important to involve local residents in this recovery process 👇

The Brave to Rebuild has restored 12 schools affected by the russian invasion! We worked in three regions where our assistance was most in demand: Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Kyiv regions. Build Back Better was our principle. We wanted to rebuild, modernise the school space, and create inclusive zones. Our team, a collaborative effort of professional architects, builders, volunteers, and local people willing to help, was instrumental in this project. We constantly consulted with teachers and students to ensure that everyone was happy with the result! We also cooperated with the savED charitable foundation, which implements the "U-LEAD with Europe " School Initiative project. Thanks to our dedicated work, schools have resumed full-time education! This project was implemented within the framework of the U-LEAD with Europe Schools Initiative and with the financial support of the European Commission's Foreign Policy Service (FPI EU).

We are proud to collaborate with the communities of the Mykolaiv region! 🇺🇦 🤝 We have signed memorandums of cooperation with the Bashtanka, Veselynivka and Snihurivka Territorial Hromadas, where we plan to carry out both current and major repairs of social infrastructure facilities. 📍As part of the project «Restoration of social infrastructure facilities in partner hromadas in three oblasts», the Brave to Rebuild team will repair the Bashtanka Lyceum roof, which was damaged by shelling. We will also restore the roofing and reconstruct the reception departments at the Veselynivka and Snihurivka Hospitals. Powerful solar stations with battery packs will be installed at each of the facilities to reduce the use of electricity from the grid and partially autonomous operation of the institutions. 👉We have agreed on project drawings with the hromada's representatives and signed agreements under which the communities will take on part of the work. The restoration of these facilities under the Build Back Better principle will improve the region's infrastructure and provide better access to social services for hromada’s residents. 🇺🇦 Together we are creating the future! The project «Restoration of social infrastructure facilities in partner hromadas in three oblasts» is funded by the European Union and implemented by the Brave to Rebuild charitable foundation and GIZ Ukraine within the Special Assistance Programme Ukraine / EU4ResilientRegions. #EU4resilientregions #SAP_GIZ_UA #MovingForwardTogether #Brave

79-year-old Nadia has lived in Horenka since birth in her family home. After the full-scale invasion, she evacuated, and later, it turned out that a Russian shell hit and destroyed the house and burned it to the ground. But she was very much drawn back home and returned right into the ashes. For 15 months, she lived on a summer veranda with virtually no amenities. Now, she is engaged in growing a garden and is grateful to the volunteers from Brave to Rebuild. She says she did not expect so much help and is very, very, very thankful to them. They cleared the rubble, built a modular house, and installed all the utilities, electricity, water, and gas. Nadia lost everything material. But she always had faith, love, and great patience. No one can take that away from us… 🤞 https://lnkd.in/dcJGbXp4

Pechenihy Lyceum: another school that we successfully restored! Despite the challenges, Pechenihy in the Kharkiv region stood strong, demonstrating remarkable resilience and avoiding occupation. However, the village was not spared from the destructive 'peace' the Russians sought to impose. A missile strike on the porch, roof, and windows was the unwelcome 'gift' that awaited the Pechenihy Lyceum. The locals, fully aware of the situation with the front line just next to Pechenihy, stepped up to support the restoration efforts. Their generous contribution of heavy equipment, including trucks and cranes, was instrumental in the reconstruction process. Thanks to close cooperation with the community, support from U-LEAD with Europe and the European Commission's Foreign Policy Instrument (FPI), we succeeded in: ▪︎ replaced the entire roof covering, and repaired the place where the rocket hit; ▪︎ repaired the exits to the roof; ▪︎ replaced some of the doors with metal-plastic ones on the third floor; ▪︎ repaired the walls after the rocket's arrival on the third floor; ▪︎ installed 84 windows; ▪︎ restored the entrance group after the arrival. We can give children a chance to have noisy gatherings in the schoolyard and discuss Don Quixote in the library.

Brave to Rebuild restored a lyceum in the Chernihiv region! "Can I stay here to live?" — this is how the students commented on their new classes. The celebration has taken place! The Lyceum in Lykhachiv, damaged by shelling in March 2022, reopened its doors on 7 October 2023. Representatives of the community, co-founders of the foundation, volunteers, students, and teachers attended the grand opening. The event program included public speeches, folk dances, choral singing, a film about the reconstruction of the lyceum, refreshments, and classroom presentations. The school was built in 1927 using the ancient Ukrainian hut-mazanka technology. We used the same technology to restore it, so each volunteer left their mark on the history of the lyceum, both literally and figuratively. From July to September 2023, 60 brave volunteers and 20 local builders worked tirelessly: - restored the outer walls using the hut-mazanka technology - replaced the existing roof with a modern one - replaced the drainage system - replaced the windows - replaced the electrical system - built an entrance group with a ramp - repaired the walls, ceilings and floors in the library, classrooms, corridor, and lobby - equipped classrooms with furniture, transforming desks, sports equipment, TV, spotlights, sound systems - painted a mural with traditional Ukrainian ornaments on the walls - renovated the recreation area, flower beds, and the school bus stop pavement - applied fire and biological protection to wooden surfaces and the roof Our task was to restore the building and create a place for schoolchildren to come to every day (even on weekends), and we did it! ____________________________________ The initiative “Local Schools Rehabilitation for Resilience” is implemented by Brave to Rebuild within the framework of U-LEAD with Europe with the financial support of the Service for Foreign Policy Instruments of the European Commission. U-LEAD's “Local Schools Rehabilitation for Resilience” initiative aims to provide concrete support to 12 selected war-affected municipalities in the Chernihiv, Kyiv and Kharkiv regions by funding their individual approaches to restoring access to education. https://lnkd.in/daddQ2us

Brian runs a small building business in Scotland. He volunteered in Ukraine for two months with Brave to Rebuild, helping rebuild areas affected by war and shelling. Now Brian, a qualified engineer, is planning to return to Ukraine again as he knows there is still much work he can do with his own hands to help Ukrainians. One of the main issues discussed at the third International Recovery Conference #URC2024, held in Berlin, was how to help Ukrainians survive the next winter. World leaders, representatives of international organisations, and businesses emphasised the priority of rapid restoration of the energy sector and social institutions. At the conference, Vitaliy Selyk and Alyona Krytsuk, as speakers, shared their experiences of restoring 12 schools in 2023 with the support of ULEAD with Europe. They also discussed the joint project of restoring social infrastructure facilities in Odesa, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv regions, led by the Brave to Rebuild and GIZ Ukraine. The co-founders of the foundation stressed the crucial role of volunteers and the support for recovery managers - Recovery Agents. Thank you, Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine, Agency for Recovery and Development, for the opportunity to strengthen Ukraine's voice in Europe and establish important partnerships.
