More experienced candidates are actively job hunting, while the number of beginners is steadily shrinking. The total number of job seekers has been steadily dropping: it’s now around 85K down from 90K at the start of the year and 92K last fall. The biggest drop is in entry-level candidates. Since summer 2023, the number of developers with no experience has nearly halved. A similar trend is seen in other tech roles, especially QAs. Candidates with 1-2 years of experience have also decreased by 20%. For non-tech jobs, the decline is smaller. On the flip side, candidates with 5+ years of experience are increasing. Senior developers are up by 17%, and other experienced tech pros have grown by 10%. Now, 40% of all candidates have 5+ years of experience, while the share of those with no experience has dropped from 21% to just 12%. Note: The chart includes candidates who have been active on the site in the last 30 days.

The Index increased across most experience levels, except for beginners, where it dropped slightly from 0.46 to 0.44 (still the highest). The biggest gains were in Management, Data Analytics, and DevOps, while leadership and recruiting roles saw slight declines. Top categories by Index: 👌 Symfony: 2.15 (candidates are receiving more than twice as many offers as they send applications) 👌 C++: 1.09 👌 DevOps: 1.02 👌 Golang: 0.97 👌 Security: 0.96 JavaScript has an Index of 0.1, and manual QA 0.16. Senior developers’ salaries average $4,500. For the first time in a year, the median salary for developers with 7+ years of experience dropped in the last quarter. Salaries for developers with two years of experience also decreased during the past three month to $1,400. Those hired with 3-4 years of experience typically expect $2,500, while developers with 5-6 years of experience are looking at around $4,000. The average salary for hired candidates without experience remains $500. Each additional year of experience now only adds about $200 to their salary. Competition among QA roles is decreasing. The average number of applications per job in September was17.6, down from 17.9 last month. However, the changes are more noticeable in some categories. For example, manual QA remains the second most competitive category, but the number of applications per job has dropped from 58 to 47. QA Automation also saw a decline, from 20 applications per job to 18 in September. The biggest increase in competition is in Lead Generation, though the total number of applications is still relatively low. There’s also a slight increase in competition for Node.js and Fullstack positions. Among all categories (the top 20 are shown in the chart), the lowest competition in September is in Kotlin, Scala, and ERP, with just over 3 applications per job (though there were only about 15 open positions in each). Security has more jobs, but the competition is also low, with an average of 4.5 applications per position. Employers are becoming less strict about English skills. The share of job postings that only require pre-intermediate or lower English is slowly but steadily growing. In September, more than 25% of listings had this requirement. At the beginning of 2022, it was less than 9%. This trend is seen in both developer and non-technical jobs. However, the percentage of jobs not requiring strong English is much higher for juniors than for seniors. For example, 38% of jobs requiring up to two years of experience accept pre-intermediate English. For jobs needing 5+ years of experience, this drops to less than 9%.

In total, candidates on Djinni sent 208K applications in these 30 days. However, only 31,000 candidates (out of 110,000 who visited the site this month) were responsible for these applications. More than half of the candidates applied to three or fewer jobs during the month: 1️⃣ 27% applied to just one job 2️⃣ 16% applied to two 3️⃣ 10% applied to three 10.5% of candidates found 15 interesting jobs to apply for. This is more common among salespeople, Fullstack developers, and manual QAs.

There are more candidates receiving propositions than those applying for jobs right now. And they are not the same candidates. In the past 30 days, 31K candidates applied to jobs, while 32K received messages from recruiters asking to concider the job. However, only 12K candidates both applied to jobs and received propositions. Developers with 1-2 years of experience apply the most, but their more experienced colleagues receive the most offers. In non-tech roles, recruiters are more interested in candidates at all experience levels. Also, in non-tech roles 55% candidates both wrote and received messages, while in other fields only 35% of applicants cought recruiters' attention.
