Recently, the team of the Regional Development Agency of the Kyiv Region joined the First Forum of Heat Producers in Zhytomyr. The event was organized by Ecoaction - Centre for Environmental Initiatives 🇺🇦, NGO Ecoclub and Zhytomyrteplocomunenergo.    The event was attended by representatives of government agencies, utilities, businesses and NGOs. During the forum, the participants discussed topical issues of district heating development in Ukraine, in particular: 🟠 problems and prospects of the industry; 🟠 tariff policy;  🟠 financial and economic condition of enterprises; 🟠 best cases of heat supply systems development; 🟠 attraction of investments and implementation of innovative technologies. The organizers of the event also presented the experience of Zhytomyr in the development of the heat supply system, in particular, they showed a biomass CHP plant, a boiler house with a gas piston plant and a solar power plant on the roof of the hospital. In addition, a study by Dixi Group and NGO Ecoclub on the state of district heating in Ukraine was presented during the event. Efficient and environmentally friendly heat supply is an important topic, especially in today's environment. 🏡 The journey toward energy-efficient buildings is advancing both in Europe and Ukraine. As our country rebuilds, it's crucial to adopt sustainable standards that will pave the way for energy independence and #resilience. Here's a quick look at what's happening: 🔋 Key points: ▶ From 2025, 1% of Ukrainian buildings will be modernized yearly to NZEB standard, rising to 3% starting in 2030. ▶ NZEB buildings prioritize #renewableenergy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels like gas. ▶ Ukraine’s reconstruction offers a chance to adopt European energy efficiency standards, key for a greener future and potential EU accession. ▶ The EU is moving towards Zero Emission Buildings (ZEB) by 2030, and Ukraine has the chance to align with these standards quicker. 💡 Why it matters: ▶ Adopting NZEB and ZEB standards will boost Ukraine’s energy independence, reduce carbon emissions, and help modernize infrastructure. ▶ Ukrainian cities should pilot low-rise energy resilient buildings using solar panels, heat pumps, and biofuel, leading the way in sustainable construction. ❗ Reports of pollution of the Seim River in Ukraine's Sumy Oblast, near the Russian border, began to appear in mid-August. One of the most likely reasons was the discharge of sewage from the lagoons of a sugar factory in the Russian town of Tiotkino in the Kursk region. The water contaminated with sewage reached Ukraine downstream. The pollution led to a significant decrease in oxygen levels in the water of the Seim and, consequently, to a large-scale fish kill. The discharge of sewage was so large that the pollution reached the Desna River, and there were even fears that the remnants of this pollution would flow from the left tributary into the Dnipro River. Surface water bodies, especially rivers, have a natural ability to cleanse themselves, but they can only cope with pollution to a certain extent. This time, aeration units were additionally used to artificially saturate the water with oxygen, accelerating the oxidation of organic matter and helping the natural process. The situation was stabilised. 🌾 To allow for a sustainable recovery, Ukraine must strike a careful balance between the immediate need to keep the economy running and long-term goals such as healthy ecosystems and equitable land distribution. To showcase the issues at stake, experts of Land Matrix Initiative analysed two land deals from the initiative's database. Read their report: https://lnkd.in/eJDCcjCZ 🚜 41% of Ukrainian exports came from the agro-industrial sector, and while the statistics have subsequently been distorted by the Russian invasion, agricultural exports are widely recognised as an important part of Ukraine’s economic stabilisation. To counter dwindling land resources and maintain agriculture as one of the country’s major economic pillars, the government has begun to promote the increased use of agricultural land in suitable and safe territories, which are mainly concentrated in the central and western regions of the country. Yet, this approach is not without problems, as the report argues, since the need for more agricultural land is deeply intertwined with the continuous rollout of land governance reforms in the last two decades – with far-reaching implications for environmental protection. Ukraine has aleady recorded more than 5,000 cases of destruction to its forests, soils, air and water directly connected to the Russian full-scale invasion, now in its third year. Ecoaction was able to take soil samples in certain areas and conducted analyses of soil from the embattled Donbas region. The results revealed extensive contamination with highly toxic heavy metals caused by the fighting. In some areas, single sample measurements for mercury, vanadium and cadmium were more than a hundred times the usual levels. Heavy metals are highly poisonous when absorbed through food or water in high concentrations, as they accumulate in the body and often can't be broken down.
