As Russian forces occupy parts of Ukraine, they are not only devastating cities and lives, but also threatening to erase precious pieces of the nation's archaeological heritage. From ancient Scythian and Sarmatian burial mounds to Cuman settlements, many irreplaceable historic sites lie directly in the war's path. But Ukrainian troops are taking extraordinary measures to protect these links to the country's identity. Soldiers are carefully collecting artifacts found in trenches and positions, like ancient ceramics, and handing them over to museums and archaeologists for safekeeping. In one audacious operation, the Azov Regiment recovered a rare lead seal of Prince Svyatoslav the Brave from Kyivan Rus' times that had been looted from Kyiv decades ago. They enlisted a brave civilian to smuggle the priceless relic back across the border to its rightful home. Beyond the physical threats of combat, the chaos of war enables looters and smugglers to plunder archeological sites and sell artifacts on the black market. Experts warn many sites will be lost forever before they can be scientifically studied.

While no major offensive has been launched yet towards Zaporizhzhia, there are concerns about Moscow's next moves. At the same time, a full-scale assault to capture Zaporizhzhia city itself would require far greater troop numbers that Russia currently lacks in the region.

In a desperate bid to rein in soaring inflation and high inflationary expectations, Russia's Central Bank has raised its key interest rate to a staggering 21% - the highest level since the early days of the Ukraine invasion. However, this draconian measure is unlikely to provide a lasting solution. Russia's economic woes stem from its massive military spending, crippling Western sanctions, and an overheated consumer demand outstripping domestic production capacities. As Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine's military intelligence, warned, Russia's financial and economic turmoil could reach a tipping point by the summer of 2025 if the current trajectory persists. The question remains: how long can Russia's faltering economy bear the burden of Putin's military adventurism before the silent resentment among the populace boils over?
Budanov's forecast in action. Will record key policy rate hike help Russia?
