ACTADE is one of the leading NGOs working on issues of trade, climate change action, Policy and development issues.
About us
African Center for Trade and Development (ACTADE) was initially established in November 2000 as a technical discussion group for trade related issues. At the time, trade discussions were dominated by International negotiations and international actors, thus the need to have a domestic and indigenous voice. It was established for the purpose of influencing and facilitating the development and promotion of trade and sustainable development through generating innovative policy ideas and policy alternatives in order to address both short and long term public policy challenges in the ever changing global, regional, national and local contexts. In June 2003 it was registered under the Company’s Act (Cap. 85) as a Company Limited by Guarantee – having no shareholding (No. 61534) and in December 2003 ACTADE was registered as a non-governmental organisation (S. 5914/4516). ACTADE is one of the leading NGOs working on issues of trade, climate change action, Policy and development issues. ACTADE has focused on strengthening stakeholders’ capacity to influence trade, citizen participation in national budget processes and related policies at Local, national and regional levels for sustainable development and improved livelihoods in Uganda and the East African region. We also work to influence the promotion and enjoyment of social, political and economic rights by all and advise government on a) priority setting for the national budget and monitor its implementation in selected sectors and districts; b) climate change adaptation measures that support communities to anticipate and build resilience to impacts of climate change; c) ensure that no one is left behind, especially not the women, youths, nor persons with disability.

We joined Plan International in Uganda and its partners this week to share experiences on what’s working well and what needs improvement. Some key takeaways: ✏️ The #Localisation agenda is taking root. Majority of the partners are community-based and none is International. ✏️ The #climatechange portfolio is growing; currently anchored in the strategic plan. We are proud of our contribution to its growth under the My Body My Future programme on the nexus with Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (#SRHR). ✏️ #Capacity strengthening for partners is still required to set up strong systems that outlive founders. The NGO Quality Assurance Mechanism (#QuAM) promoted by the Development Network of Indigenous Voluntary Associations (DENIVA) and the Uganda National NGO Forum is an important tool to enhance self regulation. #GreaterImpactTogether #Partnerships #GenderEquality #SocialInclusion

I'm happy to share an article that I've co-authored with Fatema Rajabali, Esperanza Karaho, Viola Musiimenta, and Bruce Chooma. It shares the key takeaways of a learning session we held on #intersectionality and #LocallyLedAdaptation at the Community-Based Adaptation conference #CBA18 in Tanzania in May. The #StepChange initiative will hold a webinar to continue learning on that topic in early September. Stay tuned! Building community resilience through the locally led adaptation knowledge system in Uganda --> https://lnkd.in/eqanJEG6 An estimated 68% of Uganda's employed population depends on agriculture, mostly rain-fed, and more than 80% of the rural population rely on subsistence agriculture. Most smallholder farmers are in the informal sector, and women are more vulnerable to impacts of climate change given that they are more involved in food production. Although these groups are at the frontline of the climate impacts, they are rarely involved in decision-making for climate action and have limited access to resources, including on climate information and finance. A project led by ACTADE, with technical support from IIED, aims to address these challenges by strengthening agricultural adaptation knowledge systems to build community resilience. #Uganda #agriculture #ClimateChange #adaptation

On 22nd February 2024 we launched the CRAKS project - building community resilience through strengthening agricultural adaptation knowledge systems in Uganda, and implemented jointly with the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). CRAKS is one of the Step Change initiatives supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, to accelerate equitable and inclusive #LocallyLedAdaptation. It contributes to bridging the adaptation knowledge to action gaps in the agriculture knowledge ecosystem, that is; generation, dissemination and use at different levels and across levels. It leverages existing initiatives undertaken by stakeholders along the value chain through co-creation. Stakeholders include farmers, non governmental organizations, the academia, private sector, plus government ministries charged with advancing agricultural development, gender equality & social inclusion, delivering finance, accelerating climate action, and the local governments of Tororo, Kalungu and Alebtong. During the inception workshop, stakeholders welcomed the project and shared insights on how to enable social inclusion and sustainability (beyond the project). Relevant initiatives to leverage were shared as were key lived experiences of persons with disabilities and women in agriculture. It was great to have the support of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water and Environment represented by Mrs. Margaret Athieno Mwebesa, the Commissioner of Climate Change Department (CCD). She emphasised the role of a whole of society approach that the Government of Uganda has embraced to accelerate the implementation of its Nationally Determined Contributions. Heartfelt appreciation to Marie-Eve Landry of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) who joined the workshop and emphasized support to gender transformative, locally led adaptation action, plus collaboration & learning across projects.
