Sustainability is at the heart of what we do, and we're excited to take it up a notch with our latest project. Designing an Italian-cuisine restaurant at Context-Coffee | Design-build in Kampala, we're exploring the possibility of incorporating an aquaponics system—maybe even on the roof terrace. Imagine growing fresh produce right on-site for a truly farm-to-table experience! Still early days, but we’re pumped about the potential of creating a sustainable dining experience. For the love of good food! 😂 #progressnotperfection #designbuild

  • We’re experimenting with a different approach: using tempered glass slates over rubber tubing to heat water, an alternative to traditional solar panels. The concept is similar, and we're excited to see how this experimental method plays out. Anyone with experience in this? I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas on how far we can take it! #ProgressNotPerfection #SustainableArchitecture

Some progress shots for a Boutique hotel we're designing in #Gulucity, Uganda. We focused on a "natural-looking" and breathing material palette for this town which mainly includes materials like thatch, bamboo and rattan. Sustainable features we're exploring as we progress are using recycled and locally sourced materials, rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation, biophilic Design for natural harmony, solar power integration, passive design, energy-efficient lighting and appliances, sustainable landscaping and efficient waste management and recycling systems #architecture #hoteldesign #hospitality #uganda

  • We recently completed a 271 sqm, 4-bedroom house in Fort Portal, Uganda, inspired by the traditional Tooro homestead. This design creates a balance between community living and private spaces, with an internal courtyard, terraced layout, and courtyards that artfully frame the house. We also focused on integrating both inward and outward views, enhancing natural light and airflow throughout the home. For the exterior, we chose thicker-grade deep grey metal sheets over 450mm clay brick walls for better heat regulation (on top of the courtyards and scattered openings), allowing the home to blend more into its forested surrounds. What do you think of combining traditional elements with modern architecture? Have you tried this in your projects? We'd love to hear your thoughts. You can read more about it in the highlighted post. #architecture #designbuild

At Context-Coffee | Design-build, we recently designed a 271 sqm, 4-bedroom house in Fort Portal, Uganda, inspired by the traditional Tooro homestead. This multifunctional space includes a greeting/waiting area and 3 interior courtyards, fostering a sense of community while offering private nooks for solitude. The design features a “boundary within a boundary,” enhancing seclusion and protection, with courtyards that artfully frame the house. We utilized the natural slope of the land to zone different areas, enhancing privacy and making the spaces feel larger through an internally terraced layout. The house focuses on both inward and outward views, with strategically placed voids that connect spaces visually, maximize airflow, and bring in natural light. For the exterior, we used thicker-grade metal sheets with insulation over 450mm wide clay brick walls, which together with the courtyards and scattered openings, significantly fosters heat regulation within the building. What are your thoughts on integrating traditional design ideas into more contemporary architecture? #architecture #uganda #designbuildfirm #sustainableliving

Hey everyone! We're super excited to share some images of one of our latest projects we 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 - an office building in Lira, Uganda. One of our proudest moments was welding this curved mild steel door that opens into one of our favorite courtyards. It was quite a journey, but we got it on the 2nd try, and on-site. 🎉 This piece has an 4.5m wide opening arc and stands 3.1m tall. We chose mild steel for its durability, local availability, and the fact that it's recyclable and can be repurposed down the line. This is part of Phase 1 of the project. What do you think about using mild steel for openings? Have you used it in any of your projects? Let's chat! #designbuild #architecture #construction #sustainabledesign Carina Musila

  • Sam's house - explorations.....#progressnotperfection Sam is a corporate worker during the week and a farmer on the weekends - loves the outdoors. At the moment, we're thinking to create spaces that emulate a nomadic lifestyle. Spaces that fold into each other, spaces that merge but can be separate. An "origami" house....exploring to see how far we can push this concept..... #progressnotperfection Carina Musila

  • Check out what Context-Coffee | Design-build has been upto and please leave us your thoughts....

At Context-Coffee | Design-build , we've been loving biophilic interiors. This space, #Ali'splace, is set in a Kampala surburb which gets a fair share of those cold drafts and fabulous sunny days. Intention - For the sun to warm up the polished concrete floor (or terrazzo or cement screed, still not decided 😂)through the operable glass panels, providing ideal conditions for edible creeping plants to thrive on the mesh wall. This mesh is mounted in front of a perforated curved glassblock wall (that's hiding a live-in existing tree🌴...hello interior courtyard), creating beautiful patterns of light and shadow. Included an interior fish pond (not pictured) behind that wall for evaporative cooling but our client was like, heck no, maybe an empty pond?😂 (misunderstood how adventurous he was😂) Looking forward to construction of this 4-bedroom abode. #architecture #interiorarchitecture #design #passage design #kampala #uganda
