Google Women Techmakers Kampala reposted this
As we wrap up the month of April, I'd like to highlight my proudest moment as a Women Techmakers Ambassador thus far. On the 20th of this month, I organised the biggest #WTMIWD event in Uganda. In attendance were over 170 people, 85% of whom were women. I have mentioned time and again that spaces for women in tech hold a special place in my heart, and watching these spaces grow gives me tingles of joy. Last year alone, as Google Women Techmakers Kampala, we hosted 70 or so women at the #WTMIWD celebrations. The parallel between last year and this year is quite obvious. We sowed a seed. Our sessions this year were centered the theme #ImpactTheFuture. Through this, we chose and sought to bring to light how Artifical Intelligence could shape technology, how it can affect us, how women can be included in the conversation. We had six speakers spread out throughout the day; Joanita Asio Banda, the head of Production services at Stanbic Bank Uganda as our keynote speaker. Princess Mbamalu, Rebecca Mirembe, Mariam Ndagire, Mukisa Geofrey, and Maria Gorrettie Namuddu. My most outstanding moment was during the Fireside chat called "Ethical use of AI" that I happened to moderate. During her introductory remarks, our guest, Patricia Rhoda Nekesa mentioned how we'd met at Andela in 2019 during the Andela Women Tech Leadership Program where we were cohort and groupmates. I couldn't help but beam with pride at how far we've both come! "Look at us!" We both couldn't help but exclaim as we shared. I carefully picked out the team that pulled this off. Solomon Opio, Lisa Kaitesi, Matovu Joel, Tusiime Mark, Claire Sharitah Nakakeeto, Rebecca Mirembe, Halimah Bukirwa all played very pivotal roles that enabled us to do all this. I was quite exhausted by the end of the day, but my heart was full. It was all worth it. I can't wait to do it again.
