Bwindi Community Hospital (BCH) in South-Western Uganda has a bed capacity of 155 beds and gets to see about 40,000 consultations throughout the year. The hospital has been ranked among the best performing health facilities in Uganda for the past 10 years, according to the Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau. Located about 10 hours from Kampala, power reliability has been a continuous challenge, especially given the steady expansion of the hospital and medical services offered. Availability of grid power in the region is limited and the cost of generator fuel increased to unsustainable levels. With the support of #Africomed from Switzerland, a long-time supporter of the hospital, and in close collaboration with the team at BCH, #SolarNow designed and built a 70 kWp solar PV system with a 100 kWh battery storage system that integrates with power from a micro-hydro dam that was commissioned in 2012. The rise of #DigitalEducation in #Africa is a crucial step towards empowering the next generation with essential skills. Governments, NGOs, businesses, teachers and parents across the continent all recognize the importance of integrating ICT-based learning into school curricula. In #Uganda alone over 20,000 public schools and an almost equal number of private schools are on their way to adopting ICT-based learning and digital skill development. These efforts are also supported by the Government of Uganda through their Vision 2040 and Digital Transformation Road Map for Uganda which specifically promotes Digital Literacy, Digital skilling for teachers and the Development of a National repository of digital education content. The future is digital, and all things digital require power, often 24/7. A key challenge in rolling out digital education across the continent will be the access to reliable electricity.
