SIHA Network, represented by our Regional Program Manager, Dr. Faizat Badmus-Busari, took an active role at the 81st Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) (17 October – 6 November 2024) in Banjul, The Gambia. Badmus-Busari delivered SIHA’s compelling statement on the dire humanitarian situation in #Sudan, a conflict that has displaced over 10 million people, with women and girls bearing the brunt of the violence. "The bodies of Sudanese women have become battlegrounds in this conflict," Faizat emphasized. "Urgent intervention is needed to protect them, ensure justice, and demand accountability." SIHA called on the ACHPR to: 🔸Establish a gender sensitive civilian protection system as a preventative step against the commission of atrocities. 🔸Strengthen investigations into ongoing CRSV and enforced disappearances in Sudan. 🔸Hold perpetrators accountable and ensure justice for survivors. 🔸Push for Sudan’s ratification of the Maputo Protocol to safeguard women’s rights. 📄Read the full statement here: https://lnkd.in/dvXkJNw4 #ACHPR81OS #EndImpunity #KeepEyesOnSudan

On October 22, 2024, our Regional Director Hala Al-Karib represented SIHA Network at a panel discussion hosted by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and the Rockefeller Foundation in New York City titled “New Voices for Peace: On the Occasion of the 2024 UN Security Council (UNSC) Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security (WPS)”. This discussion was held as a side event to the UNSC Open Debate on WPS held under this year’s theme “Women Building Peace in a Changing Environment.” The event sought to bring attention to the issues faced by women and girls in conflict-affected areas, ensure a commitment to strengthen gaps in the implementation of UNSC Resolution 1325 and to promote synergy between women leaders, policy makers and peacebuilders. In her interventions, Al-Karib highlighted the devastating impact of sexual violence used as a weapon of war in #Sudan, and the shocking lack of support for survivors. In her powerful address she stated: “It is unbelievable how women bodies have been used in this war in such a systematic way to break down communities, to drive communities outside of their homes, to terrorize communities. It is not only a war strategy – sexual violence in Sudan, it’s a tool, our bodies are used as a tool.” To this end, Al-Karib stressed the need for global accountability and justice for the crimes of perpetrators in Sudan and in all conflict affected areas. ▶️ Click here [https://lnkd.in/e2PfYucS] to watch the recording of this event. #WPS2024 #WomenPeaceSecurity #EndSexualViolence #SudanCrisis #UNSCR1325 #KeepEyesOnSudan 📸 Photo credit: Marlene Spoerri
