On the second day of her visit to the TeamUp Uganda program area, the Vice Executive Director and Director of Projects and Programs at Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevoelkerung (DSW), Bähr Angela, interacted with program participants and leaders of Kassanda and Mityana district local governments. She witnessed sessions on menstrual hygiene management at a primary school and sexual reproductive health in a youth group in Kamuli sub-county parish, Kassanda district. She advised peer educators to emphasise abstinence, prevention and proper management of sexually transmitted infections. She also visited a value-addition facility (modern maize mill) that TeamUp Uganda partner Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung - HRNS is constructing for youth in Kamuli and a water source managed by Whave Solutions under preventive maintenance. Here, she helped children to fill up their jerrycans 😊 . #collaboration #cross-sector #menstrualhygiene #economicempowerment Monica Basemera Miriam Cherukut Simon Peter Emuli Frédéric Bergeron Felix Opio Action 4 Health Uganda Hanns R. About us
TeamUp is a multi-sectoral approach to development cooperation initiated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and managed as well as co-financed through the three foundations Deutsche StiftungWeltbevölkerung (DSW), Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung (HRNS) and Siemens Stiftung. The program unites the expertise, networks and resources of three local organizations; Action 4 Health Uganda (A4HU), Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung Africa (HRNS) and Whave Solutions. They are implementing TeamUp in the sectors of Health, Agriculture, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). TeamUp is empowering more than 50,000 youths in Mityana district of Uganda to get a better life by empowering them to make informed decisions about their health and finances. These youths have access to improved livelihoods through agribusiness and access to financial services, sexual reproductive health services and clean and safe water. We are also creating opportunities for shared knowledge and networks, including saving circles. TeamUp is transforming the world, one youth at a time.

Later in the day, Bähr Angela had deep conversations with youth producing affordable biodegradable sanitary pads at the Makapad project, started with support from TeamUp Uganda in Malangala sub-county, Mityana district. They shared their passion for the work because they enable girls to manage menstrual hygiene better and remain in school. Bähr Angela also met with TeamUp Uganda program participants code-named Bees and Queen Bees, who take sexual reproductive health services and products to young people in hard-to-reach rural areas. She urged them to prioritise age-appropriate counselling to enable young people to make informed decisions. Dr. Vincent Kawooya, the Mityana District Health Officer who opened the meeting, appreciated TeamUp Uganda for improving family planning indicators in the district by making services and products available in hard-to-reach communities. It's been a busy week for TeamUp Uganda coordination team characterised by very exciting, challenging and empowering discussions, tasks and learnings from the Collective Leadership Institute gGmbH facilitators and fellow learners from Zambia and South Africa. The Art of Stakeholder Collaboration Course we are concluding today enables participants to: a) Learn a shared language and tools for convening stakeholder dialogues, leading collectively, and fostering trust-based co-creation. b) Develop a shared understanding of the significant challenges related to implementing planned public sector reforms and strengthen the work to address these through robust multi-stakeholder collaborative systems. c) Learn about and apply the Dialogic Change Model to mapping and engaging stakeholders across agencies and sectors in specific initiatives aimed at implementing planned reforms. The knowledge acquired by the team at the Coordination Unit will be a great asset as they lead engagements with multiple stakeholders across sectors in Uganda for replication of the TeamUp Uganda program. #EndingPoverty In Uganda, about 21 percent of the population (nearly 10 million people) live below the poverty line, unable to access the basic needs of life. Breaking free from the poverty cycle, especially in rural areas, is difficult because of limited economic opportunities and social services. Empowering young people to choose a poverty-free destiny is at the centre of our work. This is one way we aim to set the present young generation, and millions to come in future, free from poverty. We know that when incomes improve, households can undertake more investments, access better social services, and live dignified lives. We are guiding the youth to: 💰 Acquire vocational and agribusiness skills 💰 Develop business plans and establish viable businesses 💰 Learn from young entrepreneurs through peer-to-peer mentorship 💰 Access youth-friendly financial products #PovertyDay We are a consortium of three partners: Action 4 Health Uganda Hanns R. Today, we join the rest of the world to commemorate the #InternationalDayofRuralWomen. We celebrate the hard work, tenacity, and resourcefulness of rural women and girls because they mostly bear the biggest burden of challenges of living in rural areas. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by poverty, climate change, food insecurity, lack of safe water, poor infrastructure, and absence of social services. At TeamUp Uganda, we recognize these challenges and work towards empowering women to participate in development processes and enjoy a better quality of life. Through gender mainstreaming and targeted women empowerment, we are enabling rural women and girls in our target areas to: · Access safe water · access sexual and reproductive health services and products · Access agricultural inputs, finances, and joint markets · Participate in leadership at various levels · Acquire entrepreneurship skills We are happy to see rural women live in violence-free households, start profitable and sustainable businesses, and take up leadership positions in their communities. Today is #InternationalDayoftheGirlChild when we remind ourselves to keep in mind the unique needs and abilities of the girl child both at home and in the work we do. TeamUp Uganda interventions in agriculture, water, and health aim to empower young people, both girls and boys, to define their future. Young girls are especially benefitting from sexual and reproductive health services including sessions on menstrual hygiene and cool parenting dialogues. Young people uniting under Youth Empowerment Centres in Mityana and Kassanda districts are making sanitary pads to make them accessible to every girlchild. Action 4 Health Uganda Hanns R. Our plan for #disabilityinclusion in TeamUp Uganda is leaving no one behind. All key stakeholders at the various levels are getting an opportunity to give their views on ways to empower people with disabilities to participate in and benefit from our interventions in agriculture, water, and health. Thank you Uganda Society for Disabled Children (USDC) for giving technical support on this exciting journey.
Today has been yet another exciting day with the Youth Empowerment Club (YECs) Leaders and the Youth Field farmer Facilitators' that form part of the youth structures under TeamUp Uganda. Excitingly when the youths were asked what their expection was from a disability inclusion training. Eagerly, they highlighted that they needed to understand how people with disabilities can live happy and meaningful lives, How they should treat and care for People with disabilities, how not to leave them behind, How to co-exist and respect rights of persons with disabilities, how they can sensitize fellow youths in the communities on matters of disability inclusion. Amazingly through role plays the youths were able to Identify the barriers to disability inclusion. Simply put ACAP- Attitudes, Communication Accessibility and participation bariers. We are thrilled to be taking this journey of #leavingnoonebehind with this group of brilliant young people. Monica BasemeraElisabeth BiberAction 4 Health UgandaHanns R. Happy Independence Day! #independence The theme for Uganda’s 62nd Independence Day anniversary is: “A recommitment to secure and fortify our destiny.” At TeamUp, we are committed to cross-learning and collaboration aimed at generating integrated systemic change in the agriculture, water, and health sectors in Uganda. We believe that our initiatives in these three sectors will significantly contribute to realizing the country’s population dividend. Through interventions in agribusiness and access to financial services, sexual reproductive health services, and clean water supply, we are securing and fortifying the destiny of young people aged 15-30. Our goal is to motivate young people, who make up more than 70 percent of the population, to shape their future. We empower them to lead healthier lives and attain higher household incomes for sustainable socio-economic transformation. Happy Independence Day!
