🌽 The 1st grain harvest of 2025 has come to a close. The seasonal rains are especially late wreaking havoc for the Rwamwanja farming community, but things seem to be changing this weekend to enable some replanting. 🌽 Already this year we have procured 301 tonnes of maize grain, with 24% being purchased direct from the local smallholders (68% women) at a price 6-9% higher than market rates. So far this grain has been transformed into 136 tons of food (flour) sold within a 30 mile radius, and 62 tons of livestock feed (bran) for Rwamwanja's poultry farmers. 🌽 Most farmers have now sold their grain due to a lack of storage capacity and their cash flow needs. While we continue to provide support to our farmer groups on drying & storage technologies and linkages to finance, most our grain will now be sourced from local aggregators (many of whom are refugees) until the next harvest (July). #refugeeeconomies #RwamwanjaRefugeeSettlement #FarmersFirst #localfoodproduction

Working with refugee smallholder farmers in Uganda to manufacture quality value-added food products
About us
A Social Enterprise with a mission to manufacture quality value-added food products from crops grown in refugee-hosting areas of Uganda. Through this, we can sustainably deliver on our three main goals: 1. Strengthen agricultural supply-chains in refugee hosting areas through farmer training and input-provision programmes 2. Provide a more reliable and fair market directly to refugee farmers 3. Promote more biodiverse farming systems within a humanitarian context We have been running commercial operations since January 2022 centred in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement, Western Uganda. We produce and sell UNBS certified maize flour to local wholesalers. We will develop new products increasing the number of crop types we can buy at fair prices from smallholders year round. We conduct various farmer outreach programs within Rwamwanja with over 800 farmers. These activities are mostly held on a mixed 20-acre demonstration farm which we manage in Rwamwanja to showcase regenerative farming practices.

In celebration of International Women's Day, Challenge Fund for Youth Employment published an article showcasing the impact of Turaco's extension team on female farmers, thanks to support from WeAreCohere and Opportunity International. https://lnkd.in/epTBagVb Just like much of the world, women are the leaders when it comes to agriculture in Uganda and the backbone of food security. We're proud to have worked with 1,044 women so far here in Rwamwanja, helping them to strengthen their skills and build improved market linkages. #FarmersFirst #WomenInAgriculture #Rwamwanja

✨Turaco Valley Foods wishes you a Happy New Year! ✨ As we are busy returning to work, we have been reflecting on all that Turaco achieved across 2024. Here are some highlights: 🌽 798,500 kgs of grain procured from local refugee and host community farmers = improving market linkages by offering premium prices for premium quality 🏭 Produced 448,702 kgs of maize flour (UNBS certified quality) – currently producing 3.5 tons of flour per day, with capacity to increase to 7 tons on the same machines in 2025 📈 Increased revenue by 150% compared to 2023 🚚 Supplied +150 local retailers and wholesalers with 446,783 kgs of flour, providing an affordable and safe food source 🛒 Sold 221,369 kgs of bran to become a main provider of livestock feed within the refugee Settlement, stimulating new poultry enterprises 💼Employed 23 full-time staff (7 refugees) and 13 part-time community agents 🌱Increased average incomes by 45% for 800 smallholders (66% female, 70% refugee, 76% below the age of 35) through provision of practical training in organic maize production and permaculture, and distributing post-harvest materials and quality seeds to 800 trainees (66% female, 70% refugee, 76% below the age of 35) We are proud of these achievements. They bring us closer to proving that agricultural enterprise at scale is viable within a refugee-hosting context when strengthening pre-existing value-chains. In 2025, Turaco will continue to 1) equip refugee and host community farmers with the skills and inputs needed to ensure quality harvests 2) directly purchase crops from farmers to build more a inclusive market, and 3) manufacture quality foods for local consumption. We do this to support the livelihoods of the local refugee and host community, as well the work of our parent WeAreCohere to champion the localisation of aid through partnerships with refugee led organisations. Thank you to our supporters and partners Rabobank, King Baudouin Foundation Challenge Fund for Youth Employment, as well as our partners @ All For Integral Development and Tomorrow Vijana
