Manchester City midfielder Rodri won the men’s Ballon d’Or and Barcelona playmaker Aitana Bonmati took the women’s award as a ‘disrespected’ Real Madrid boycotted the prestigious ceremony in Paris - despite being named men’s club of the year. Rodri beat the Real Madrid trio of Vinicius Junior, Dani Carvajal and Jude Bellingham to the top honour, and that verdict from the 100-strong panel of voters prompted the delegation from the Spanish giants to stay at home. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has called for a rethink of global copyright law to allow Big Tech to train AI models without risking infringing intellectual property rights. This is one of several key lines in our AI Weekly Digest, which also features OpenAI CEO Sam Altman playing down claims that its relationship with key investor Microsoft is fraying. The UK CMA opened a merger inquiry into Google's $2bn Anthropic investment and Derry Girls creator Lisa Mcgee said the AI-driven transformation of ITV Studios and ITVX was “depressing” and “unethical”. On a more positive note, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told business technology leaders to prepare for a “new industrial revolution".

Our AI Weekly Digest quotes Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who believes “powerful AI” - “smarter than a Nobel Prize winner” - will become a reality in as little as two years. Meanwhile, Meta AI researcher Yann LeCun dismissed claims that AI is a threat to humanity as “complete BS”, and argued that LLMs can never lead to true artificial general intelligence. In domestic AI news, US tech groups have committed to invest £6.3bn in UK AI data centres. And the sector’s legal wranglings continue, with the New York Times, which is already suing OpenAI, sending a 'cease and desist' notice to AI-powered search start-up Perplexity, accusing it of using its stories without permission to generate results.
