On World Mental Health Day, we align with this year’s theme that stresses the importance of mental health and well-being in the workplace. In our latest article, SPACE Architects Visualiser Andy Forbes offers a powerful perspective on Navigating Workplace Anxiety.   Andy opens up about the challenges many face and the realities of social interactions, such as the self-doubt that follows even the simplest of exchanges. Andy goes on to share techniques, quotes, and words of encouragement for those who struggle most during their days in the office. This includes guidance on viewing situations from a broader perspective and reframing uncomfortable moments as opportunities for personal growth.   Discover Andy’s insights and practical advice here: https://lnkd.in/e5r3QSqN   At SPACE, creating and maintaining a supportive environment where conversations about mental health are always welcome is of the utmost importance. In architecture, where precision and self-expectations run high, prioritising mental health is paramount. Our practice is committed to providing a space where every team member feels heard, valued, and understood.     #WorldMentalHealthDay #Workplace #Architecture

This World Architecture Day, we're celebrating the invaluable role young architects play in fostering sustainable and resilient urban environments. This year's theme encourages emerging talents to lead the way, and we're proud to spotlight Architect Sarah Bedwell's impactful work, along with the collaboration between Architectural Apprentice Jade Atkins and our KTP Associate Architect, Catherine Sinclair. "Working alongside Catherine Sinclair on our Eston Precinct project has been incredibly insightful," says Jade. "She's shown me how impactful early decisions can be on reducing embodied carbon." As the architect leading SPACE's Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Northumbria University, Catherine is developing the SPACE Digital Carbon Model. Jade has gained experience using Catherine's embodied carbon design tool that analyses key design considerations from the outset, enabling architects to understand and mitigate carbon impacts. "We would run different scenarios through the tool, and Catherine would then show us how each decision affects the structure's carbon footprint," Jade explains. "For instance, placing the plant on the roof seemed like a space-saving solution, but due to the weight implications on the steel structure, it would raise embodied carbon significantly. Knowing this, we were able to shift the plant to a more sustainable location." Sarah Bedwell, shares a complementary perspective: "As a team, we work on the premise that the greenest buildings are those that already exist. We undertake many creative reuse projects, often with historic buildings where balancing preservation and sustainability is key. Taking a fabric-first approach helps us minimise operational carbon by reducing reliance on mechanical services. No matter how small the project, we always strive to make a positive impact, improving the built environment for future generations." This thoughtful approach to reuse and early-stage carbon-aware design is central to SPACE's mission to embed sustainability seamlessly into architectural practice. "It's opened my eyes," Jade notes. "Seeing Catherine bring carbon considerations into every discussion reminds me of the responsibility we have as architects today. Sustainability isn't just an option; it's the new baseline. The knowledge she's imparted will have a lasting effect on my approach to design." Jade and Sarah both acknowledge that while conversations around sustainability can feel daunting at times, the advice of Directors, alongside Catherine's work, greatly demystifies the complexity. Sarah adds, "Wanting to make a difference is important, but having experienced members of the team offering insight makes it achievable." This commitment to sustainable design reflects SPACE Architects' dedication to a low-carbon future, supported by innovative tools and a new generation of architects striving to make a difference in the built environment. #Design #WorldArchitectureDay

We are proud to share that Catherine Sinclair has been shortlisted for the RIBA Journal’s Rising Stars 2024! This recognition reflects her pioneering efforts in driving sustainability at SPACE Architects. Through her leadership in our Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Northumbria University, Catherine is shaping the future of sustainable design with the development of the SPACE Digital Carbon Model. "It's great news to have been shortlisted for RIBA Journal’s Rising Stars 2024. It is testament to the innovative and important work that is being undertaken at SPACE in collaboration with Northumbria University, creating a tool and a framework to reduce whole life carbon from the earliest phase of a design," Catherine commented. A truly inspiring member of our team, Catherine is advocating for integrating whole life carbon analysis into the early stages of design, empowering architects to reduce both embodied and operational carbon and create net-zero buildings. Reflecting on her work, she notes: "I was very surprised at how, across the industry, very little thought is given to whole life carbon during the early stages when it can make the most difference." Catherine’s vision is clear: sustainability must become an intrinsic part of architectural practice to create a resilient, regenerative built environment. Congratulations, Catherine, for this well-deserved recognition! Supported by SPACE Architects, Space Group's annual _shift conference returns on November 7th 2024. With buildings contributing to 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and these emissions expected to double by 2050 without intervention, our conference provides a necessary platform for exploring and implementing strategies to keep global warming below the 1.5°C threshold. Now in its third year, _shift, remains focused on decarbonising the built environment, bringing together key players and innovators for meaningful discussions that drive transformative action. On November 7th, you can expect inspirational presentations from inspiring speakers such as John Elkington and Emily Penn, in-depth panel discussions, and networking opportunities with fellow professionals committed to climate action. Please note that while _shift is a free-to-attend event, registration is essential. We're excited to share that SPACE Architects has been named a finalist at the 2024 Building Innovation Awards in the category of "Most Innovative Partnership". This recognition comes from our ongoing collaboration with Northumbria University through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) supported by Innovate UK. Together, we're focused on reducing the whole life carbon (WLC) of buildings, with a particular focus on embodied carbon—the carbon emissions generated by the materials and construction process. Our shared goal is to make reducing carbon emissions a standard part of the design process from the earliest stages, supporting the UK's 2050 net-zero targets as well as the RIBAs 2030 climate challenge. Leading this important work is our very own Catherine Sinclair, SPACE Architects' KTP Associate and Architect specialising in Zero Carbon. Catherine has been instrumental in driving the development of the SPACE Digital Carbon Model (SDCM), a design tool that helps architects and designers make carbon-conscious decisions from day one. This approach will allow for reductions in carbon emissions even before life cycle assessments are carried out, offering a proactive way to reduce the environmental impact of buildings. At SPACE, we feel so fortunate to be part of this collaborative effort, and we are delighted to see Catherine and the team's commitment recognised. Being a finalist in the Most Innovative Partnership category highlights the strength of bringing industry and academia together to tackle the challenges of decarbonising the built environment. We look forward to the awards on October 17th in Manchester. #BuildingInnovationAwards #Sustainability #ZeroCarbon #Innovation #NetZero #Architecture
