We support primary school children who are struggling with their reading across Berkshire, UK
About us
Primary schools across Berkshire are benefiting from the support that our volunteer reading mentors provide to children who are struggling with their reading. Our volunteers are able to spend one to one time with these children, getting to know them and boosting their confidence and skills. Teachers tell us that this brings benefits in many areas, not just improved literacy. To find out more about the services that we offer and how they work, please visit our website www.abctoread.org.uk. Arranging for one of our reading volunteers to work with children at your school involves a simple process: Schools identify children who would benefit from the support of a reading mentor. ABC to read matches one of our trained reading mentors with your school. The volunteer comes to school twice a week and spends half an hour each with up to 3 children, playing games, reading and boosting their confidence and skills. Our volunteers are supported by an ABC to read field worker, who has experience of the role themselves. We also encourage schools to provide feedback about the service to the volunteer and to ABC to read. Each year we ask you to complete a short survey so that we can monitor the difference that our mentors are making to the children in your school.

Today is #NationalBookLoversDay! 📚 As we celebrate the joy of reading and the magic of stories that captivate us, we're reminded of the importance of helping every child discover that same passion. Our dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to support struggling readers, giving them the tools to unlock a world of imagination. This term, we're looking to partner with new schools and welcome new volunteers to join us in making a difference. Together, we can help every child become a lifelong book lover. info@abctoread.org.uk

🌟 Why we do what we do and why we are needed 🌟 To illustrate the extent of the literacy problem in the UK: In 2023, 27% of 11 year olds left primary school in England not meeting the expected reading standard, according to the Department for Education After Covid-19 lockdowns and school closures, the gap in attainment between children from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers has widened further, suggesting that the disruption to learning had a more significant impact on disadvantaged children The longer-term consequences of this are hugely damaging for both the child and for society more widely: Teenagers without basic literacy skills are significantly more likely to be excluded from school, commit crime, and to spend time in prison In 2023, the Ministry of Justice released statistics on the UK prison population, stating that 65% of prisoners had literacy skills no higher than those expected of an 11-year-old. Annually, it costs more than £40,000 to incarcerate each individual In 2021, it was estimated that seven million people (16.6% of working age adults) in the UK have "very poor" literacy skills In addition to the financial and social costs of crime and time in prison, the economic cost of poor literacy has been estimated to be £81 billion per year to the UK economy Poor literacy can lead to limited job prospects, poor health, low self-esteem, and even reduced life expectancy Adults with poor literacy skills will be locked out of the job market and, as a parent, they won't be able to support their child's learning Teaching children to read can be done relatively inexpensively and is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce young offending and crime, as it raises their potential and the opportunities available to them www.abctoread.org.uk info@abctoread.org.uk
