Next week I will be attending the Academy For Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia ASCAT Annual Conference on Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassaemia, taking place in London! This year I had the great honour to be part of the Scientific Committee! Do you have a research idea that needs developing and want to share it with an experienced panel of Sickle Cell researchers? Mark your calendars and take action! We are thrilled to announce the Collaborative Research Catalyst workshop, offering three ASCAT attendees the unique chance to present their research ideas to a panel of experts and receive valuable feedback in a supportive, interactive environment. -This is an invaluable learning and networking opportunity open to anyone with a research idea, whether you have a clinical background or not, whether you have lived experience of SCD or not, and whether you have a formal research role or not. -Apply by Monday, 12 August 2024. Selected researchers will be notified by Monday, 26 August 2024. What’s involved? - Complete the online expression of interest form (scan the QR code) to tell us more about you and the idea you’d like to present. - If selected, prepare a three-minute elevator pitch outlining your research idea and any aspects that you would like the panel to discuss. - Present your idea to a panel of experts and a friendly audience of up to 20 ASCAT attendees, and receive feedback in a supportive environment. Have you signed up for the Sickle Cell Disease in Sub-Saharan Africa book launch yet? Patient advocacy plays an important role in life of people living with sickle cell anaemia. With contributions from Baba Inusa Julie Makani Ify Osunkwo, MD, MPH Nkechi Valerie Azinge-Egbiri, PhD Bukola Bolarinwa Kanayo Nwankwo Livingstone Gayus Dogara and some of our secondeees amongst others, this intriguing compilation looks at the socio-economic aspects that affect the well-being of sickle cell disease (SCD) patients in sub-Saharan Africa. This book examines several important topics, such as the societal factors that cause SCD to spread, the effects of stigma, the overall psychosocial cost of this common disease, and the quality of life for children who have the disorder. Collaborations with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and global partners are also covered in the sections on public health management and policy.
