Change is scary for most people. Regardless of what you are changing, whether it is big or small, or what you think of it, any change can elicit the ‘fear of the unknown’ in your staff and in response, they will resist it. Why? Because change is emotional and as soon as emotion is involved, all logic goes out the window. Of course, everyone will react to change differently. There will be some that will love it and will actively help to bring it about and grow your business, but there will also be others who won’t be so positive initially and they will try to preserve the ‘norm’ to make themselves feel safe. To get your staff to want to help you achieve your growth plans actively, you must understand the Emotional Cycle of Change and help them through the journey. Only then will they transition from saboteurs to champions. Fed up of your profit not growing in line with your revenue? Were you making more money when you were much smaller? You are not alone. When the members of our AGC1000 group (for members who are either over £1m or rapidly getting there) get together, they frequently focus on how to improve their profitability. Let's get real here. When you go from you to a team, your net profit margin will take more than a haircut. After all, you are no longer doing the majority of chargeable client work. The risk is that as your practice grows from £250k, to £500k, and onwards, that low profit margin can never really recover. The net result is that you can work really long hours and often be the lowest paid person in your practice. I've worked with Nicky Goringe Larkin for years (and I mean years) and seen her practice grow rapidly. In the last few years she has deliberately stopped chasing revenue and focused on profit growth. In this short video, taken at @Accountex in 2024, she explains why she needed to make a major change in her strategy and mindset to increase her firm's revenue growth. Have you ever felt fearful when it comes to your pricing? Dive into this carousel to unveil 5 fascinating ways fear can sway your pricing choices. 🫣 Fear: We will become too expensive and shut off our stream of new client work. 😀 Reality: Your firm’s new fee structure is likely to persuade the very prospects you don’t want as clients to not get in contact. As long as your firm is still delivering a valuable service in the mind of your Clients then you can raise your fees. 🫣 Fear: We will lose too many of our existing Clients if we put up our fees. 😀 Reality: Your firm will lose a few Clients when it increases its fees. However, these are often the Clients your firm wants to lose. The gains in revenue, profit and extra capacity your firm will make will easily offset the losses from Clients leaving. 🫣 Fear: Implementing a fee increase will be commercial suicide. 😀 Reality: Staying where your firm is right now with too many low fee, low recovery type clients IS probably a slow way to commit commercial suicide. Most small accountancy firms, with the benefit of hindsight, always wish they had put up their fees earlier.
