We are thrilled to see this important partnership between Liverpool John Moores University's School of Law, and #WindrushJusticeProgramme group, Liverpool Advocates for Windrush, bringing pro bono guidance to anyone seeking redress through the Windrush Schemes, with supervision from legal professionals. L.A.W. joint-founder Tonika Stephenson, said: “Windrush is a British scandal and needs to be rectified by British society. These people are still facing grave uncertainties because of historic pieces of immigration legislation enacted to affect minorities. https://lnkd.in/g3JVv6mD

WINDRUSH LAUNCH - Windrush Justice Scheme!!! https://lnkd.in/eGnBw2sY My speech: This is a timely and much needed collaboration, between Liverpool Advocates For Windrush (LAW) and Liverpool John Moores University Legal Advice Clinic! ‘Start as you mean to continue’ is the advice we received from a lecturer during my 1st year undergraduate law degree. Pondering what this meant, I came to learn that it means ones’ attitude to tasks, studies, work, life... This was later reaffirmed by my Director of Studies, Professor Jay Cullen Cullen, who said a Ph. D thesis is easy to write but the hard part is actually finding the tenacity and determination to push forward, when you feel like giving up because of any number of reasons. Garrick Prayogg and I considered, after founding LAW. Having operated in the Windrush space from 2018 and 2019 respectively, we witnessed first hand what worked, what did not work and what was needed, given our own lived and related experiences. We acknowledged that we could not achieve this alone and quickly appreciated the magnitude of the goals we had set. We asked LJMU LAC Rachel Stalker for support, as a well-respected institution which celebrated it’s 200th year anniversary last year, where #ProfessorMarkPower: Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive who said that 'we are celebrating our 200th anniversary by celebrating our people, our partners and our community.' Without community, we would not be able to strive forward. This collaboration means that together we will be able to support a larger number of claimants in our communities, affected by the grave and inhumane injustice called the Windrush Scandal, in addition to those who will be from 1 January 2025 by what is coined ‘the digital Windrush Scandal’, by offering free Windrush related support, guidance and free legal advice where appropriate. On behalf of L.A.W.'s team: 1. Ngunan Adamu – BBC Journalist and a Committee member 2. #JeannetteFrancis – Retired Trauma Nurse and our Person-centred Trauma Counsellor and Committee member 3. Elliot J. – ECHO Journalist and our Marketing Director 4. Louise Harbour – Campaign Lead at Aid Alliance and our Community Outreach and Campaigns Director 5. Maureen Mitchell - Family Solicitor and our former caseworker 6. Gemma Collins – Community Development Inclusion Officer at Sefton CVS and a Person-centred Trauma Counsellor 7. Ean Flanders Brand Photographer Flanders – Award-winning Portrait photographer and a volunteer 8. #DrNicolasGarron – Lecturer at Liverpool Hope University and a volunteer To all of our other volunteers, Liverpool Hope University, Boniface Chimpango (PhD), Malla Pratt, Suhana Rao thank you! A special thank you to Windrush claimant #ShaneSmith. And, to our funders who has given us the opportunity to be here this evening. 1. Action for Race Equality UK; 2. #TheWorldReimagined; and 3. 'Ethnic Minority' vs. 'Global Majority': A Question of Representation" The terminology we use to describe diverse communities is constantly evolving. Whilst "ethnic minority" has long been the standard, "global majority" is emerging as a potential alternative. Both terms aim to represent the same groups, but they carry distinct connotations and implications. Some argue that "ethnic minority" inadvertently reinforces a sense of marginalisation, while "global majority" acknowledges the demographic reality that people of non-European descent constitute the majority of the world's population. This shift in language prompts important considerations: Accuracy: Does "global majority" more accurately reflect demographics? Impact: Does "ethnic minority" perpetuate a sense of otherness? Identity: How do these terms shape perceptions of identity and belonging? Consequences: Is this a purely semantic debate, or does language have real-world effects? I'm interested in hearing your #perspectives on this evolving terminology and its impact on how we perceive ourselves and others. #diversityandinclusion #languagematters #globalmajority #ethnicminority #representation #marketresearch #culture #insight #terminology #representationmatters #equality #inclusion #diversity #languageandculture

This Black History Month, our Routes2success role models dive deep into the power of reclaiming narratives.🙌🏿 Each blog explores the stories and histories they aim to reclaim, from honouring the pioneers of Black history to transforming traditional representations of Black communities. In her blog Brianna Cyrus reflects on why discarding the colonial label “West Indies” and embracing “Caribbean” respects the legacy of the region. R2S role model and business expert Bayo Igoh illuminates the overlooked history of African entrepreneurship, showing how Black business leadership is woven into the world’s economy. In our latest blog, Greg Bonsu challenges us to envision Black History Month as a catalyst for hope and action, creating a legacy of progress for future generations. Clare Fletcher thank you! Thank you also to Rachel Stalker, the founder of LJMU Legal Advice Centre who worked tirelessly with myself, to make our launch a reality. However, neither of us could not have done this without our team, colleagues, volunteers, friends and family. Thank you! And most importantly, those who have been affected by this egregious Scandal. Thank you for giving me the opportunity over the past 5 years to support and assist you and a Big thanks to #ShaneSmith who attended and shared his sombering experience of being affected by the Windrush Scandal. To our funders Action for Race Equality #NationalTeachersUnion and #WorldReimagined, Thank You! #WindrushJusticeNow #ActionNotPromises #HillsboroughLawNow #LetsSeeTheChangeBeginNow
I was honoured to attend the launch of Liverpool Advocates for Windrush (L.A.W) at Liverpool John Moores University last night. The L.A.W provide legal status consultation, compensation claim assistance, research and application processing, but most importantly - specialist trauma- informed care. We heard heartbreaking oral testimony of the human cost of this process and the ongoing and lasting effects of the scandal. It was poignant that the launch took place on the very day that Home Secretary Yvette Cooper renewed her commitment to Justice for the Windrush generation with a £1.5 million fund for advocacy support. My lovely friend and L.A.W co founder Tonika Stephenson - you absolutely smashed it! Congratulations- your dedication to Access to Justice is simply inspiring. #Justice4Windrush #HillsboroughLawNow #TruthJusticeAccountability #AccesstoJustice
