Last week Tareq Sirhan, Head of Energy for North Asia at Actis, spoke at the Infrastructure Investor Australia Forum on a panel focused on renewables platforms as an investment strategy. Tareq used the panel to underscore the importance of continuing to invest in renewable energy, both because of the opportunities presented by renewables projects but also because such investments are crucial if countries are to reach their net zero targets. He also highlighted that growth markets with large demographics receive a minority of infrastructure investments, meaning there is a demand/supply imbalance for infrastructure in these markets. Tareq also discussed Actis' investment into Japanese renewable energy platform Nozomi Energy as a case study, explaining how initially the platform was created to focus on onshore wind and solar generation but that it now also invests in battery storage as this technology has become more financially attractive and helps to create a more compelling market offering. One of the main takeaways from the Forum is that digital infrastructure and energy transition in particular remain key themes of interest to LPs. If you’re attending FII Institute 8 next week, don’t miss General Atlantic’s panel session looking at patient capital in an impatient world and the levers and lessons this approach offers for value creation. Actis Partner and Head of Energy Infrastructure, Lucy Heintz, will join a panel of experts, moderated by Gabriel Caillaux, Co-President, Head of EMEA & Global Head of Climate at General Atlantic, to discuss this key subject and explore the transformative potential of long-term partnerships between visionary founders and management teams. With a KPMG survey finding only 10% of private investment firms consistently unlock the full financial potential of their investments through value-creation strategies, this is clearly a topic in need of deep thought and Lucy will explain Actis’ rigorous approach to value creation. To attend the panel, please arrive in LAB 5 by 9:30am on Thursday 31 October - we hope to see you there. #FII8 #Investment #InfrastructureInvesting

Rahul Agrawal, Head of Energy for Southeast Asia at Actis, spoke at The Asset’s 19th Philippine Summit last week on a panel about transforming the infrastructure landscape.   The session looked at how the public and private sectors can work together to ramp up the delivery of critical energy infrastructure, including how the Philippines can further accelerate its ambitious infrastructure programme and stay on track with its energy transition goals. This provided an ideal platform for Rahul to discuss Actis’ investment in Terra Solar Project – the world’s largest integrated renewables and energy storage project in the Philippines*.   It was a great conversation between Rahul, Eduardo Francisco, Wick Veloso and Jeffrey M., moderated by Daniel Yu.   #SustainableInfrastructure #SustainableInvesting #InfrastructureInvesting   *When fully commissioned, as measured by battery energy storage capacity

Actis has won the Digital Infrastructure Africa Award at the IJGlobal ESG Awards 2024 for its successful investment in and recent exit from Octotel. The award, which recognises a transaction that has truly moved the dial on ESG within digital infrastructure, follows the completion of Actis' Octotel exit in September following a period of significant growth for the South African fibre business under Actis ownership which saw the number of homes passed with fibre rising from 195,000 at investment to 350,000 by exit signing and the number of customers connected increasing from 56,000 to 110,000 over this period. Under Actis ownership, Octotel became a true sustainability leader, notably thanks to its social initiatives, which included: - Providing a free 1GB fibre internet connection to every registered primary and high school passed when deploying the network, with more than 150 schools accessing free internet. - Securing a new ZAR 2 billion ‘social loan’ facility, provided by RMB - Rand Merchant Bank, to support network expansion into lower living standards measure areas and drive digital inclusion. - Increasing the proportion of female employees. - Investing in community development activities, reaching thousands, including bringing connectivity to Waumbe Youth Development Centre to enhance digital literacy programmes and give 150 students access to online literacy. - Creating employment opportunities in lower income areas, recruiting a minimum 30% of construction and installation project teams from local communities. This target was typically exceeded, with 50-60% local workers on most projects. - Passing fibre to c.70,000 homes in lower living standards measure areas, increasing connectivity with affordable internet on an uncapped basis. Congratulations to our team, particularly Matthew McCollum, David Cooke and James Magor for this achievement. Actis is continuing to invest in the fast growing digital infrastructure sector, with US$1.7 billion committed. #SustainableInfrastructure #SustainableInvesting #DigitalInfrastructure

Alberto Estefan, Partner, Energy Infrastructure at Actis, recently contributed to an article in Infrastructure Investor, discussing how Mexico is benefitting from the surge in nearshoring and supply chain reallocation, particularly thanks to its proximity to the U.S., and its favourable demographic dynamics. This industrial development is creating significant opportunities in energy infrastructure, with Actis playing its part in supporting this expansion, having built or operated more than 7GW of installed capacity in the country*.
