Last night Liz Wright hosted our first Club Welfare Officer forum with 14 Club Welfare Officers covering hockey, tennis, wrestling, football, fencing, squash, taekwondo, cricket, cycling and canoeing. Huge thanks to everyone for coming along and supporting us in this journey to improve welfare and culture. Some good learning from each other about the great practice that is already going on and some agreed projects to move forward on. The Sport Welfare Officer network supports Club Welfare Officers to create safe, inclusive spaces for everyone involved in sport. It's not too late to get involved - contact Liz by e-mail to Liz.Wright@cumberland.gov.uk #ActivePartnerships #SportWelfare

Today's #SocialValueReport24, which has been published by Sport England, demonstrates that inequalities in activity levels are a social and economic burden but if we protect and invest in sport and physical activity, particularly for people that face barriers to taking part, we'll all be healthier, wealthier, and happier. As Professor Chris Witty, the Chief Medical Officer for England, states: "This reports shows that we need to make it easier for particular groups to engage in physical activity including sport." This is a key focus for the #ActivePartnerships network as we understand the local barriers and work collaboratively with partners to break them down, helping everyone to move more. A statement from the National Sector Partners Group: On 30 October, the UK Government will announce its Budget – the first of a new Parliament.   We know that increasing opportunities for physical activity in childhood can break down barriers to opportunity and help create the healthiest and happiest generation of British children and that’s why, in this Budget, the Government must deliver for children and young people.   Sadly, at present less than half (47%) of children and young people are active for 60 minutes a day as recommended by the UK's Chief Medical Officers. Change is required - we need a new national plan guaranteeing every child 60 active minutes a day.   The Government can use this Budget to help break down barriers and ensure every child and young person has opportunities to be physically active every day, in schools and communities. This can be achieved by extending funding for successful and impactful programmes currently delivering physical activity, including the Primary PE & Sport Premium, Opening School Facilities and Holiday Activities and Food programmes, as well as guaranteeing safe spaces to be active and access to high-quality coaches and activity professionals outside of the school environment.   Key to progress is the Government working in partnership with the National Sector Partners Group and the wider sport, physical activity and recreation sector, as well as with other sectors such as education and health. By doing so, and unlocking the potential held across communities to deliver opportunities reaching every child, the Government can harness the power of physical activity to support young people to develop a life-long love of movement, improving both their physical and mental health. We have recently published our Annual Report 2023-24 which summarises our progress and achievements for the year. The theme of this year’s report is the very relevant subject of ‘change’, and we take the opportunity to reflect on the changes we have seen in terms of local government structures, our own hosting arrangements, the focus of the work we are undertaking, and the change that our services seek to support in the communities we serve. The case studies provide a snapshot of our work over the last 12 months, which are sectioned to mirror the footprints of the new local government structures across Cumbria. We've published the latest set of data demonstrating the impact of Cumbria Street Tag.   Take a look at the stats that have been produced by our Street Tag players keeping active with the app over Season 1 and 2! Amazingly, over 105,000kg of CO2 emissions has been saved by players choosing to travel actively rather than using cars for their journeys. It’s not too late to create your team, join the free programme and take part in Season 3, contact oliver.carswell@cumberland.gov.uk for more info.

It's been a busy start to the new academic year and we’ve just released dates for our Cumbria PE Network Meeting (Autumn Term) and a range of Teacher CPD for the 2024-25 (with more to follow!). These form part of the support we offer to schools to embed physical activity and active travel into their ethos. The support is centred around the following 5 aims: ·      Help schools understand their current position with regard to physical activity, active travel and sport provision. ·      Provide access to a variety of extra-curricular physical activity, active travel initiatives and sport provision. ·      Develop skills and confidence in subject leadership in Physical Education. ·      Deliver relevant CPD, learning and networking opportunities. ·      Increase opportunities for participation in sport for less active and SEND children through a comprehensive School Games offer. If you’d like to discuss how we can support your school please contact Kirsty Williamson by e-mail to Kirsty.williamson@cumberland.gov.uk who will be pleased to speak with you.
