About us

Adapt40 is a specialist climate adaptation consultancy. We deliver practical solutions and technical assistance to organisations across the public and private sectors, enabling them to act at the required pace to protect climate-vulnerable communities and ecosystems by 2040 across Asia-Pacific, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. Why Adapt40? 2040 was the year that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicted we would reach human-induced global warming of 1.5°C. Since that prediction (made in 2018), the science indicates we might reach the 1.5°C threshold much sooner. Therefore, climate action needs to be fast-tracked, and Adapt40’s focus is to support that transformation. We are focused on three key service offerings: 1. Identify - Climate and Disaster Vulnerability and Risk 2. Create - Urban / Rural Adaptation Measures and Solutions 3. Build - Capacity via Training Sessions, Tools & Guidance Material Development www.adapt40.com

Adapt40 is pleased to be supporting the delivery of UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme)’s RISE-UP urban, biodiversity and climate resilience programme, funded by AGENCIA ESPAÑOLA DE COOPERACION INTERNACIONAL PARA EL DESARROLLO - AECID. As part of this work Jessica Tinkler and Ben A. were recently in Jordan and Tunisia to deliver workshops focused on building climate resilience for urban poor communities around the world, through identifying multilayered vulnerabilities. In addition to Jordan and Tunisia, we are working on projects in Colombia, Bolivia and Ethiopia. Working alongside some brilliant UN-Habitat colleagues, including Lucia Gasser Hidalgo and Lee Michael Lambert, we've focused on supporting the validation of urban, climate and biodiversity vulnerability maps, identifying hotspots of vulnerability and initiating the identification of adaptation options for Sahab Municipality (Jordan) and Kerkennah Municipality (Tunisia). The team were also there to provide capacity development to the municipalities and key stakeholders, working with the UN-Habitat country teams. Thank you to Deema Abu Thiab, Ledia Nimri, Alia Asad, Aya Hammad and Hussien Muhsen from the Jordan office and to Mariem Rekik and Aida Robbana from the the Tunisia office. Looking ahead, we are excited to be presenting work on this programme at the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt in Cairo this November, to share learnings and insights and connect with others working on climate resilience. Please reach out if you are also attending!

Community-level hazard mapping is a key element of building community resilience! Adapt40 had our first of three training sessions with the amazing Corporación Nuestra Génesis team, who are doing remarkable work supporting communities in Cali, Colombia. Their initiatives, centre around environmental education, waste management, and empowering women and children as community leaders, to help foster resilience and sustainability.    Corporación Nuestra Génesis work closely with communities and meaningfully contribute to social and environmental development in vulnerable areas. This collaboration as part of our pro-bono commitment is aimed at helping to build capacity for Nuestra Génesis to feature more climate resilience in their programming.   The first session focused on identifying and defining climate risks while introducing methods for conducting participatory hazard mapping exercises. We explored practical ways to engage communities in mapping local vulnerabilities and assessing risks.   A big thank you to Lina Paola Pachon, ZULAY MORA RIVAS, Juan Martín and the rest of the Nuestra Genesis team for their participation, and to Sebastian Mortimer and Jessica Tinkler for leading the session. We’re excited for the next session, which will cover strategies to reduce vulnerability through regenerative, nature-based, and community-based solutions. #Resilience #Sustainability #ClimateAction #InclusiveDevelopment #SystemsThinking #ParticipatoryDesign #NatureBasedSolutions #HazardMapping

We are thrilled to celebrate the successful completion of the Green Design Knowledge training under the Laos-Australia Connectivity Partnership (LACP). Over the course of four weeks, 23 dedicated staff from #Laos’ Department of Roads, within the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and the Department of Public Works and Transport (DPWT) gained invaluable insights into sustainable, inclusive, and resilient infrastructure practices. P4I is proud to support this training on green design and integrates Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change (DRRCC) considerations in infrastructure, together with the Australian Embassy in Laos. By addressing challenges like deforestation, biodiversity loss, and rising transport emissions, we aim to enhance resilience to climate-related hazards and promote environmental sustainability. Huge congratulations to the participants. Your achievements today pave the way for tomorrow's sustainable development.   #GreenDesign #SustainableInfrastructure #ClimateResilience #LaosAustraliaPartnership

We’ve hit an important milestone in our Laos-Australia Connectivity Partnership (LACP). At our recent Program Coordination Group, P4I shared designs for the upgrade of two vital cross-border facilities with Laos’ Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT), marking a significant step forward in enhancing trade and tourism connectivity with Thailand and Vietnam. These designs prioritise inclusive and resilient infrastructure, integrating innovative features like solar panels and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations alongside traditional protective measures such as slope protection. The upgrades are instrumental in bolstering Laos' integration into regional logistics networks, particularly in sectors such as agriculture. The facilities are located along National Road No. 2, which forms part of Asian Highway No. 13 – a prioritised pipeline project in support of ASEAN’s connectivity agenda and are important from the point of view of seamless regional connectivity. P4I is proud to collaborate with Laos PDR and The World Bank to drive increased trade, employment, and inclusive economic growth through high quality sustainable infrastructure. We are celebrating Biological Diversity Day! Biodiversity is an incredibly important aspect of climate resilience... We are nature protecting itself. We prioritise working on projects which have a focus on biodiversity / Nature-based Solutions, and that's why we are delighted to be part of the UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) Resilient Settlements for the Urban Poor programme, which works with communities to understand the interlinkages between climate, biodiversity and urbanisation and utilise that knowledge to build resilience. Get in touch if you have experience working on Nature-based Solutions / Biodiversity / Protected Area Management etc, we'd love to hear from you and see how we can work together.

🌍🌿 Today, on International Day for Biological Diversity 2024, we celebrate the incredible diversity of life that sustains our communities, cities and planet. This year's theme, "Be part of the plan," resonates deeply with our ongoing work assessing vulnerability in cities and urban poor communities in Bolivia, Colombia, Ethiopia, Jordan, Laos, Madagascar, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Tunisia under the UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) Resilient Settlements for the Urban Poor programme. Our multi-layered assessment dives into the interconnected challenges of #urbanization, #climatechange, and #biodiversityloss. By examining how people, infrastructure, and ecosystems are affected by these intertwined and cascading threats, we aim to uncover critical insights and drive meaningful locally led adaptation action. Through the support of AECID and the 2030 Agenda Sub-Fund of the UNPDF, we've just launched a 'Training of Trainers' capacity building programme for local leaders and practitioners that aims to strengthen knowledge and understanding on the role of biodiversity in building systemic resilience of cities, including for the most vulnerable communities. The demand-driven sessions equip participants with the technical know-how, skills and tools to assess vulnerabilities related to biodiversity and design targeted interventions that promote healthy biological diversity, mitigate the adverse impacts of urbanization and climate change, and leverage invaluable ecosystem services. On this special day, let's reaffirm our commitment to protecting and enhancing biodiversity. Together, we can build cities that are not only resilient and sustainable but also thrive in harmony with nature. 🌱🏙️ #InternationalDayforBiologicalDiversity #UrbanResilience #ClimateAction #SustainableCities #Bepartoftheplan Cerin K. We are very pleased to have recently completed a project with Catholic Relief Services which helps small-scale farmers identify and adapt to climate hazards. The resulting tool currently covers 31 countries in Africa, the Middle East, South Asia and South America, with this reach projected to be extended further going forward. The tool combines self-diagnosis with climate projections to analyse current and future climate exposures, vulnerabilities and adaptive capacities. It then guides users through a list of measures designed to tackle these climatic impacts, suggesting low-cost and nature-focused initiatives to integrate into communities and small-scale farms. #climateadaptation #climateresilience #climateaction #climateconsultancy #adapt40
