Worthing Borough Council is asking for comments on its planned updated approach for facilitating the delivery of affordable housing as part of major developments. The draft Supplementary Planning Document is designed to show developers the level and type of affordable housing they must provide as part of new construction projects. It links to the current Worthing Local Plan and updates previous guidance that was introduced in 2015. Our swimming facilities at Wadurs in Shoreham and Splashpoint Leisure Centre in Worthing are on their way to becoming more sustainable thanks to the proposed addition of hundreds of new solar panels. Following our successful application to Sport England’s Swimming Pool Support Fund, we have been awarded more than £170,000 to install 322 solar panels across both sites. Early estimates point to the all-new solar array at Wadurs producing more than 70 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity each year, while the additional panels at Splashpoint Leisure Centre are predicted to produce more than 60 megawatt hours (MWh) each year. For Wadurs, this means the solar panels would run the whole facility for nearly six months of each year. For Splashpoint Leisure Centre, the additional solar panels would run the pumps on one of its pools for approximately six months of each year. Together, the new solar panels are estimated to save more than 25 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year, the equivalent of 1,200 trees being planted annually. The addition of almost 150 solar panels to Splashpoint Leisure Centre is due to be reviewed by Worthing’s planning committee on Wednesday 21st August. Planning permission is not required for the array at Wadurs. Decarbonising our buildings forms a key part of our missions to be a carbon-neutral council by 2030 and a net zero area by 2045. Keep your eyes peeled for our modular homes which will be craned into place in Lancing in September as part of our work with Adur District Council, to transform a run-down garage site into much needed housing. A brownfield site in Lancing is being transformed into a new neighbourhood of affordable modular homes from Boutique Modern. We’ve been working with Adur District Council on deliering the 16 affordable homes at the Daniel Close and Gravelly Cresent sites. The properties feature solar panels on the roof and have been designed with a fabric-first approach to ensure they are cool in summer but warm in winter to keep energy bills low for residents. Work is already well underway, and the development is due to complete in February 2025. Earlier this year, Sussex Bay received the backing of Rewilding Britain, which awarded the movement £100,000 through its annual Rewilding Challenge Fund to kick-start its ambitious projects. Worthing Borough Council has chosen the contractors who will help it build 11 new energy-efficient council homes for residents in need of somewhere to live. In the coming weeks SUNNINGHILL CONSTRUCTION CO. LIMITED will move onto the old RAF Air Cadets site in Victoria Road, Worthing, to start work on the urgently-needed new flats. There are around 1900 households on the housing register in Worthing and these new flats will mean the council can help local families who are at risk of becoming homeless. The council is currently having to house hundreds of families outside the area, away from their friends, relatives, jobs and schools, which damages their quality of life and is very expensive. The project will mean that as well as bringing Worthing citizens back to Worthing, the council will be able to focus more of its resources on providing services to the community. Its officers have secured around £800,000 of government funding to clear the site and help pay for the development. The new flats will be built to Passivhaus standards, which means they will be so well constructed, insulated and ventilated that they need very little energy to heat or cool, so the residents will have far lower fuel bills. It is hoped that the first Worthing citizens will be able to move into the new homes in the autumn of 2025.
