The Future of Air Force Fleets
About us
For generations, Air Forces have faced the challenge of operating an ever-growing mix of single point aircraft designs. Each brings its own logistic support, management and training burden. Each locks the military into a single point design for a generation. Operational flexibility is limited. Change is expensive. Until now. The AERALIS system will reshape air forces with new levels of integration, configurability and sustainability, and deliver significant opportunities for UK aerospace and manufacturing. The AERALIS system creates a range of optimised configurations for established tactical and training roles, each one formed around the same Common Core Fuselage and Intelligent Integration of digital systems and avionics. All AERALIS configurations have 85% commonality of parts. Air forces can rationalise their fleets with no loss of capability, while enjoying an increase in their strategic options through the inherent flexibility of a modular system. AERALIS WELCOMES INDUSTRY-FOCUSED COMMENT FROM MARIA EAGLE MP UK Minister for Defence Procurement, the Rt Hon Maria Eagle MP, made a welcome connection between national security and the UK’s economic fortunes yesterday. The comment was made in response to a question asked by Conservative MP, Andrew Rosindell: “To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what steps he (sic) is taking to increase domestic defence production capabilities.” Ms Eagle commented: “This Government recognises the vital role of the defence industry in both keeping our country safe and in providing businesses, jobs, prosperity and tax in all corners of our United Kingdom. “Our UK industry partners, of all sizes, are very much at the heart of our One Defence approach and we recognise the value that suppliers bring to the defence enterprise. That is why this Government is committed to bringing forward a Defence Industrial Strategy. “The Defence Industrial Strategy will align our national security and economic priorities and will aim to create a better, bigger, more modern, connected, innovative, and resilient defence sector. It will also consider requirements for onshore production capability to ensure the UK has the industrial base needed to meet potential future threats.” AERALIS has called for a more innovative, flexible and commercially-minded approach to defence. Founder and CEO, Tristan Crawford, commenting on AERALIS’s submission to the #StrategyDefenceReview last month, said: “There is a win-win solution for the RAF, MOD and the Treasury on the table. The challenge of budget deficit and military need are not mutually exclusive – we’ve got a solution that helps both at the same time.” We’re very pleased to be a part of this future defence landscape, and we thank Ms Eagle for her vocal support of the domestic defence industry. AERALIS DEPLOYS AEROGILITY'S AI FOR FUTURE FLEET PLANNING AERALIS is partnering with AI-based digital simulation twin pioneer, Aerogility, to enhance future fleet planning for its world-first modular military aircraft system. By modelling the future of a fleet through the entire lifecycle of an asset, Aerogility’s model-based AI technology will equip AERALIS’s integrated digital enterprise with insights into forecasting, planning, risk management and strategic decision-making. Aerogility’s technology will create a digital replica of the AERALIS fleet from the aircraft design stage, enabling detailed future fleet planning while the Phoenix programme continues apace. Gary Vickers, CEO of Aerogility, commented: “Our collaboration with AERALIS goes beyond conventional fleet planning. Together, we are creating a Platform and Fleet Availability Model, which will influence the design of AERALIS’s support system and platform architecture. The model will enable AERALIS to set baseline availability and a through-life cost model to credibly deliver on its promises of reduced through-life costs and increased fleet availability.” AERALIS’s modular military aircraft system will feature open-architecture avionics, a common fuselage, interchangeable outer wings, and centreline engine nacelles. Underpinned by an end-to-end digital enterprise and certification framework, AERALIS supports both crewed and uncrewed missions, from training through to frontline support roles, all while significantly reducing costs across development, production, training and maintenance. Mark Williams CEng FIET, Availability Director at AERALIS, commented: “Aerogility’s AI capabilities are instrumental in our ability to shape future fleet planning and optimise the support and upgrade processes of our modular system. With the insights afforded by Aerogility, we can deliver greater mission versatility while reducing operational costs, making our aircraft system a highly flexible and cost-effective solution for modern air force needs.” Photo: Mark Williams of AERALIS and Nigel Yard, Head of Defence Division at Aerogility, mark the agreement alongside the AERALIS #Phoenix engineering demonstrator. #GCAP #FCAS #DigitalEngineering #AI

AERALIS HELIX EVENT 'AN OVERWHELMING SUCCESS' AERALIS welcomed special guests to its Bristol headquarters last Wednesday to share results and key findings of its landmark proof-of-concept project for digital aerospace engineering. Delegates from the Future Combat Air System (#FCAS) programme, Catalyst, Typhoon, and civil and military regulators, joined AERALIS and digital delivery partner, Siemens, to see demonstrations of what is believed to be the most digitally integrated engineering trial yet conducted in aerospace. A subset of AERALIS’s #Phoenix programme, the work has proven the viability of end-to-end digital engineering, design, modelling, testing - and certification - of aircraft. The UK UK Ministry of Defence will undoubtedly benefit significantly from AERALIS’s work; informing FCAS and the ability to apply the RAF’s open systems architecture framework, #PYRAMID. Guests remarked that the digital integration achieved by AERALIS went further ‘up and down the engineering ‘V’’ than anything yet seen and praised the team for its openness and willingness to engage stakeholders and industry partners. AERALIS founder and CEO, Tristan Crawford, commented: “The day achieved everything we’d hoped for and more. Our work has proven AERALIS’s credibility and cemented ourselves as leaders in digital engineering in UK military aerospace, as well as underlining our value to enterprise partners.” Anton Burford CEng MIMechE Burford, AERALIS Capability Director, added: “We really opened some eyes to the power of digital end-to-end integration and reversed some scepticism. The proposition this work validates for digital certification of military air platforms landed particularly well.” The day ended very positively with all parties keen to maintain engagement and define next steps in this important, ground-breaking research. Anton and the rest of the AERALIS team are also developing a more concise version of Wednesday’s demonstration for wider industry stakeholders. We will, of course, keep you posted. AERALIS TO MARK COMPLETION OF MILESTONE ACHIEVEMENT WITH HELIX EVENT AERALIS will welcome special guests from the UK MOD, regulators and AERALIS digital partner, Siemens, to their headquarters in Bristol this week to celebrate delivery of a landmark proof-of-concept project. In what AERALIS believes to be “the most digitally linked engineering trial” yet undertaken in aerospace, a subset of the AERALIS #Phoenix programme was chosen to validate the viability of digital engineering to design, model, test and certify an aircraft. The work provides the digital workspace for application of the RAF’s open systems architecture framework, #PYRAMID, as well as providing UK MOD with unique knowledge and know-how for future Combat Air (such as the Global Combat Air Programme (#GCAP)). AERALIS Capability Director, Anton Burford CEng MIMechE, commented: “We’ve been referring to this approach as a ‘digital weave’ because in terms of complexity it’s a paradigm shift beyond a digital thread. To achieve end-to-end, digital-design-to-digital-certification, demands a level of assurance that has never been done before. The engineering alone is challenging, but from an assurance/regulatory perspective it’s a whole new world.” In the spirit of the AERALIS enterprise approach, the project was achieved with close co-operation with the regulators, the MOD and Siemens. AERALIS founder and CEO, Tristan Crawford, commented: “The digital undertaking required to deliver Phoenix is far beyond what our industry has seen to date. The AERALIS team has demonstrated world-leading expertise in delivering this groundbreaking project for the MOD. It’s a key step towards hitting our timeline, showing the way for other future military aircraft programmes to deliver safe, cost-effective and flexible capability to the frontline faster.” AERALIS has named the demonstration event ‘Helix’, likening the digital weave to a spiral chain running through the entire engineering process. We’ll report back from the event later this week so do make sure you follow AERALIS to stay up to date. #DigitalEngineering #Certification #Assurance #AirWorthiness

AERALIS SUBMITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE MOD'S STRATEGIC DEFENCE REVIEW: AERALIS yesterday submitted its contribution to the UK Government’s ‘root and branch’ #StrategicDefenceReview (SDR). Launched in July by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and led by former NATO Secretary-General, Lord Robertson, the SDR began by commissioning written submissions from within the MOD, industry, think tanks and others. The SDR comes at a time when the Government is tackling a c.£6.9 billion deficit in the UK’s military equipment plans for 2024 through to 2026, while concerns are already being voiced for the readiness of the UK’s armed forces, training pipelines and ongoing ability to support allies overseas during a time of ever-growing threats. While AERALIS cannot divulge the contents of its submission, it will be to no one’s surprise that in response to these challenges, AERALIS calls for a more innovative, flexible and commercially-minded approach to defence – one that supports emulating commercial models and use of #modular and #digitalengineering to deliver pressing capability needs, domestic growth and export opportunities – all whilst reducing to a minimum the burden on the public purse. “There is a win-win solution for the RAF, MOD and the Treasury on the table,” commented AERALIS founder and CEO, Tristan Crawford. “Our submission sets out a low-cost, low-risk and perpetual route to more cost-effective light jet capability for the UK and our allies, while dramatically improving training pipelines in the process and generating income for UK plc. The challenge of budget deficit and military need are not mutually exclusive – we’ve got a solution that helps both at the same time.” A period of ‘review and change’ will follow in October and November this year, with reviewers due to submit their final report to Mr Starmer ‘in the first half of 2025’. The outcome of the review will then be published in the spring. #SDR #UKPlc #Growth

AERALIS founder and CEO, Tristan Crawford, was the special guest on Siemens’ ‘Industry Forward Podcast’ recently. In an insightful conversation with Dale Tutt, Vice President of Industry Strategy at Siemens Digital Industries Software, Tristan explained the origins of the AERALIS concept, and how that drives the company’s mindset and culture to deliver. This enables ground-breaking digital innovation, and an unprecedented level of flexibility, availability and value for money for the RAF, global defence partner nations and commercial industry partners. Tristan commented: “…it is designed so that even private companies – commercial companies, can operate this hardware and this software on behalf of the military customer. Because in that way, private industry and commercial industry is actually motivated and incentivised to acquire and finance this equipment and operate at a very high level of availability, using a contract basis which is incentivised to deliver outputs and outcomes… “This is a mindset and an architecture which is needed to really transform defence aviation. “Our mindset – our culture – is about delivering that shift in mentality and architecture, and air system thinking – so that wherever the industry needs to go, be it in Europe, the US, the UK, Asia – this is what friendly forces are going to need to have.” It’s a mindset shared by US Air Force Chief of Staff, Gen. David W. Alvin, who commented about USAF’s shift in focus away from long-term platforms at Farnborough in July: “It’s the systems that make the difference. So privileging design rather than very expensive hardware that is so expensive you can’t afford enough of them to be able to use, I think is one of the areas that we’re pursuing in several of the capabilities we’re developing…If you can fit that technology into the current form factor because it’s modular, great..” Listen to both parts of the podcast here: 1️⃣ https://lnkd.in/eptrGzbv 2️⃣ https://lnkd.in/eCBiwJMP 👉 Remember to Follow us here on LinkedIn for insights on the AERALIS programme to deliver the Future of Air Force Fleets for the UK and around the world. #UKDefence #AirForce #DigitalEngineering

IT WAS with warm hearts (and hot necks) that the team welcomed home our stunning full-scale Phoenix Common Core Fuselage (CCF) engineering demonstrator to the AERALIS headquarters in Bristol last week. The Phoenix demonstrator left the scorching heat of Doha, Qatar four weeks ago on a ship bound for the scorching heat of…Aztec West. Although the summer sun was welcome, it did give the team a proper roasting as they nursed the precious cargo from trailer to the AERALIS hangar. Kane Marshall, AERALIS Assembly Director, who oversaw Phoenix’s manufacture and shipping to and from the DIMDEX defence show in Qatar, commented: “It’s great to have it back. It’s been a real team effort to develop our first, real Core Fuselage, get it built, shipped to a key defence event, return it, unloaded and unpacked safely. Phoenix has fared really well in transit – she’s looking great.” The Phoenix demonstrator was built to showcase the design maturity of the CCF – the engineering and digital heart of the AERALIS modular air system, which enables true spiral development and rapid configuration for a broad range of air missions all supported by end-to-end digital certification. With a DAL-A software driven reconfigurable cockpit display, it also gave international visitors to DIMDEX their first impression of how AERALIS platforms can be configured to train for a range of different front-line types whilst giving both pilot and instructor the best ergonomics and field of view of any trainer on the market today. Phoenix will remain at the AERALIS offices for now to be used for upcoming customer, programme partner and STEM engagements that we look forward to reporting on soon. Thanks to Kane and the rest of the team for your sterling work in the heat! #AERALIS #Phoenix #UKDefence #Pyramid #UKAerospace
