What Jim Detert understands better than any other researcher I know is that organizations embody “deep rules” – an unwritten understanding of what can and can’t be said. Building on one of the pioneering thinkers in management, Chris Argyris, who inspired and mentored both of us (Jim and me), Jim adds new depth to the observation that “theories-in-use” (not “espoused theories") shape behavior in organizations. Without uncovering these kinds of implicit rules, #organizations and their leaders are doomed to be constrained by them. His concise and powerful new article in MIT Sloan Management Review is worth a read.

WHAT YOU STILL CAN'T SAY AT WORK Employees say they want more voice, and leaders tend to say they agree employees should have more input. Many invest substantially in efforts to make their organizations more psychologically safe. Yet year after year, the same challenges persist -- lack of trust and commitment, low engagement and morale, etc. In a new short article in Sloan Management Review, I share my take on (part of) why this is: People still generally feel they can't say most of the things that would get to the root of their organization's problematic policies and norms. To do so would violate the *deep rules* about the organization's leadership and power structure, and those kind of comments remain taboo. Take a look (it's open access) for a further explanation of this idea and some suggestions for surfacing more of what people want to say, but aren't. #difficultconversations #courageousconversations #psychologicalsafety #power #communication #leadership https://lnkd.in/eBuQVMpM

The latest State of the 'Adult Social Care Sector and Workforce in England' report from our parent group Skills for Care - a must read for everyone working in health and social care. In addition to filling vacancies, Skills for Care estimates the sector will need another 540,000 posts by 2040 if the workforce is to grow in proportion to the number of people aged over 65 in the population. Sarah-Jane Dale, Tristram Gardner, Andy Tilden OBE FRCOT, Jon Dolman, Michael West, Vic Rayner OBE,
