We're a charity working to create a society where everyone enjoys later life.
About us
The Centre for Ageing Better is pioneering ways to make ageing better a reality for everyone, including challenging ageism and building an Age-friendly Movement, creating Age-friendly Employment and Age-friendly Homes. The UK’s population is undergoing a massive age shift. In less than 20 years, one in four people will be over 65. The fact that many of us are living longer is a great achievement. But unless radical action is taken by government, business and others in society, millions of us risk missing out on enjoying those extra years. We are a charitable foundation, funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, and part of the Government’s What Works Network.

Dehumanising. Offensive. Stereotyping. Condescending. Patronising. What were these words used to describe? These are a just few of the words that people used about real newspaper headlines that talked about older people. This needs to change. It's time we call for older people to be more fairly portrayed in the media. "That's really insensitive and I think it takes away the fact that we're all going to be of that age at some point, if we're lucky." Says one person we spoke to after showing them these headlines. What can you do? If you think that #ageist headlines should become a thing of the past, join us and call on print regulators Independent Press Standards Organisation to add avoiding age discrimination to the official guidance that journalists must follow. Do you feel like the home you live in is safe? Our #SafeHomesNow spotlights series brings the consequences of unsafe homes into focus by looking at the different aspects of the crisis of poor-quality housing. In this first spotlight by the Centre for Ageing Better and Independent Age, we look at the impact of poor-quality housing on older people. Older people are particularly vulnerable to the health consequences of unsafe homes and there are a growing number of older renters who need strengthened rights and support. Age UK is absolutely right to highlight the need for a change in societal attitudes around ageing and older people and pointing to the high prevalence of ageism in this country. Ageism lies at the heart of the barriers to employment, the reduced quality in healthcare and the restrictions to community life many of us experience as we age. Becoming ‘old’ is something we should all be able to aspire to do and so ageism is the prejudice against our future selves. And as self-defeating as it is on an individual level, its widespread prevalence in our country means we are also failing to fulfil our potential as a nation. The more voices that speak out and challenge ageism and negative attitudes and behaviours towards ageing and older people, the sooner we can end its harmful impact on society and individuals. It is time to remove the barriers which stop older people from realising their full potential and contribution to society so that we can all hope to age without limits in the future. This is why we launched Age Without Limits: a campaign that aims to change the way we all think about ageing and to support a growing movement of people and organisations working to make society more age-inclusive.
Let’s change how we age 💜 Today, we’re launching our new campaign aimed at changing the way we age. The experience of growing older needs to change and Age UK is leading the charge. From providing specialist, impartial advice to research and campaigning, we want to change the lives of older people now and in the future. Donate, campaign or volunteer today. https://bit.ly/3YkKFNT

“Amid the spending cuts and tax rises of this Budget, it is vital that this government holds true to their missions and their long-term vision. We need this government to consider the 50+ age group in all its areas if it wants to grow the economy, reduce pressures on public services and lower the numbers of people ageing in poverty, damaging their health in dangerous housing and unable to access essential services." Says our Chief Executive, Dr Carole Easton on the #AutumnBudget. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has set out a historic Budget, the first ever delivered by a woman, which will increase taxes by £40 billion as she promised to “fix the foundations” of the economy. Ageing Better has analysed the key policy announcements and what they mean for our older population in our new press release. Read in full here: https://lnkd.in/ebhYnXBb
