We're a charity working to create a society where everyone enjoys later life.
About us
The Centre for Ageing Better is pioneering ways to make ageing better a reality for everyone, including challenging ageism and building an Age-friendly Movement, creating Age-friendly Employment and Age-friendly Homes. The UK’s population is undergoing a massive age shift. In less than 20 years, one in four people will be over 65. The fact that many of us are living longer is a great achievement. But unless radical action is taken by government, business and others in society, millions of us risk missing out on enjoying those extra years. We are a charitable foundation, funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, and part of the Government’s What Works Network.

"As well as committing more funding to support the NHS, the government needs to look more long-term at preventative measures to lower demand. Developing a national strategy to fix cold and dangerous homes across all tenures would help to significantly reduce pressures." Says our Chief Executive, Dr Carole Easton on last week's #WinterBudget. Read more in our latest press release: https://lnkd.in/ebhYnXBb #SafeHomesNow #SaferHomes #OlderPeople #OlderAge

The new DWP report shows that the 50 to 64-year-old age group makes up over 40% of the working-age disabled population, whilst the 18 to 24-year-old age group makes up just over 10% of the working-age disabled population. Dr Emily Andrews, Deputy Director for Work at the Centre for Ageing Better, said: “While it is positive news that the number of Disabled people in employment is growing, it is a significant concern that there is a greater increase in the number of Disabled people who are becoming economically inactive. “As this DWP report, and our own research, makes clear this impacts older workers in particular, with the 50 to 64-year-old age group making up over 40% of the working-age Disabled population. Our own research shows older people with a long-term health condition are more likely to be out-of-work than their younger peers. “The DWP research shows there is a real appetite for this group to be in work and they are more likely to want to be in work than non-disabled economically inactive people, with over one in five (20.6%) of Disabled economically inactive people wanting a job as compared to just under one in six (14.4%) of non-disabled economically inactive people. Have you been able to secure suitable work in older age? Sadly over half (53%) of the 3 million people currently economically inactive due to long-term illness or disability, are between 50 and 65. It's time we made a change. Millions of older workers with health conditions face years of financial uncertainty before retirement because of a substantial drop in employment rates as they enter the final third of their working lives Find out more in our health and work report: https://lnkd.in/ePwhZnsd #OlderWorkers #OlderEmployees #OlderEmployers #Ageing #OlderAge

Dehumanising. Offensive. Stereotyping. Condescending. Patronising. What were these words used to describe? These are a just few of the words that people used about real newspaper headlines that talked about older people. This needs to change. It's time we call for older people to be more fairly portrayed in the media. "That's really insensitive and I think it takes away the fact that we're all going to be of that age at some point, if we're lucky." Says one person we spoke to after showing them these headlines. What can you do? If you think that #ageist headlines should become a thing of the past, join us and call on print regulators Independent Press Standards Organisation to add avoiding age discrimination to the official guidance that journalists must follow.
